Heather & I brought our newborn son home to Bklyn from the hospital in Manhattan on Monday, 9/10/2001. We awoke the next morning to find the WTC North Tower burning & billowing smoke with a huge gaping hole in the side of it on the TV. Just 3.4 miles to the west of where we lived. While she breastfed the baby, we debated in shock: I insisted it was an accident, but Heather knew. It was no accident. As I was probably mansplaining something about my theory, we watched the second plane, Flight 175, cut violently through the South Tower and explode. It was like slow motion as it approached. We both started crying and she was concerned that her emotion would affect the baby through the feeding. But we couldn’t turn it off. Then word and images came in about the Pentagon. Then, once again we were discussing whether or not the towers would fall. I was hopeful the firefighters could put it out; Heather said “No way, they’re going to collapse” - her father was a fireman and a marine. Again, sadly, she was right. After what felt like a couple hours but might have been less, we finally couldn’t take any more images and we turned it off. Heather had the idea that I should go get cash (what little we had in our account) just in case transactions, banking were affected. It felt like anything and everything was going or could go horribly wrong. Maybe we’d need to beg and pay someone to drive us to my parents in CT, as we didn’t own a car. I went out with a red bandana around my nose and mouth, and my rollerblades, and started out towards the bank. The wind was blowing strong towards the east that day. It was actually a gorgeous day. (Gorgeous days in September always remind me and make me a little sad.) That’s when I saw them. A SEA of people, many covered in ash, solemnly walking up Flatbush Ave having come off the Brooklyn Bridge. Subways had been shut down. It was like a scene out of a zombie movie. Our baby boy was named for H’s father Chuck🧑‍🚒, who he never had the pleasure to meet. Our @phoenixgobbee 🐦‍🔥a symbol of rebirth, and new beginnings through the fiery resurrection from the ashes. Our boy. Our city and all its people. One love. by @mgobbee
