![RIP to the absolute legend that was Patrick Stewart. I don’t really have the words.
This has been a very difficult week. One of our cats is seriously ill, and yesterday was the funeral of an old work friend, a man who was the same age as me. So this news has hit particularly hard. I haven’t really had the energy to post properly, but I have to mark the passing of an actor who meant so much to me. STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION is my favourite show of all time, and Patrick Stewart’s Picard was its beating heart. It’s impossible to overstate the impact this show and this character had on me growing up, and how much they continue to have. It’s my comfort show, and such an endless source of inspiration. (One episode in particular inspired a huge element of the lore from The Invoker Trilogy. Swipe to the end for that.)
When Patrick Stewart was cast as Professor X in the X-Men movies, I was so happy. I didn’t agree with many of the casting choices, but he was absolutely perfect, and he will forever be my Charles Xavier (don’t even mention what they did to his character in Multiverse of Madness… I’m still furious about it! [And I also think it would never happen.])
He had such a distinctive voice… I remember when I first watched the dub of NAUSICAA (one of my fave movies of all time) I recognised him from the very first word. Such powerful delivery.
I’m not sure what my fave Picard episode is. Maybe “Q Who”? I usually love the Q episodes - he and Picard are such great foils. Although I also love his chats with Guinan. This episode has both.
RIP and thank you to a true titan.
