Starvation vs. Risk of gunshot getting food/aid. This is an inhumane choice. Today, 33 people in Gaza died of starvation, 12 of them children. This number is going to grow, and the number below is cruel; both are preventable. The GHF and IDF have to expand aid distribution. And we need a cease fire now. 😭 by @mhersky

Update Week 3: Surgery knee flexion is more than 120 degrees, driving and back in the gym doing leg presses as well as new exercises (per physical therapist). It’s not been easy or painless, but the progress is encouraging. ☺️ by @mhersky

Update: Two weeks ago today I had a total knee replacement. After lots of PT, exercising and short walks, I walked a mile on Saturday! Today I had (27?) staples removed from my knee and graduated from a walker to a cane. Icing is my friend. All in all, progressing nicely! by @mhersky

Random caregiver question: How much of your life has been spent in waiting rooms and ERs for other people the past 5 years? As I round hour two waiting at the eye doctor for my favorite octogenarian to finish his appointment, I’m estimating I’ve lost a year of my own time in pursuit of others’ health. Not complaining, just marveling at the enormity of it.

Her nurse called today from memory care. The stitches on her forehead from her fall wound came out beautifully, but she now has a skin tear on her ring finger which has swollen and they can’t remove her ring. I told them to cut it off and save it for us. We can’t have the ring growing into her finger when it heals. Good thing it’s not her favorite and she no longer wears her wedding ring. It’s just a thing. But if it’s not one thing, it’s another. I can’t stand not being with her during all these injuries. 😡😢

This picture was the greatest gift last week and the best picture of her taken during COVID. Her memory care has kept her in isolation due to other residents testing positive, which has put more pressure on the caregivers so they don’t have time for video calls. I worry for all of them and the caregivers. #endalz #covid19 #dementiasucks by @mhersky

Today was the 66th anniversary of her second wedding to him (long story). But she didn’t know because she’s in memory care and he couldn’t see her because of COVID19, with too few caregivers to do Zoom calls on top of everything else required in their demanding jobs. So the day came and went. We’ll celebrate next week. 😔 #endalz #dementiasucks #facesofcare #covid19 by @mhersky

I praised her topknot and colorful blouse, but she didn’t respond. Quarantine has kept her safe, but the isolation has worsened her disease. 😔 by @mhersky

Mother’s Day from a distance meant a drive-by car parade, a long-distance program, cards and a multi-generation video. We’ve used up all our creativity for the rest of the year! I’m so grateful for this woman and her team. She is my lifeline to my mother-in-law in memory care. Nurse Misty listens even when I am intensely advocating for or worried and crying about my husband’s mom. Thank you Misty, for everything, but especially now during COVID-19 lock down. This caregiver/patient advocate sees you and the hard work you do. Nurses and care-workers in long-term care communities are among the most under-appreciated medical professionals.
