Today was our last Creative Wildlife Club session with our @allofusinmind Creative Minds colleagues. A lovely hour was spent crafting some more rock critters for the Museum's Welcome Garden. Keep an eye out during your next visit and try to spot one of these colourful creations at the entrance to the Museum! 🐹🪱🐞🌻🐟🌳🐍

Over the last few weeks along with our @Creative Minds colleagues we've been running a creative wildlife club for South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust service users and staff. So far we've tried our hands at shadow drawing, pebble painting, cyanotype printing and nature colouring in! It's been so wonderful to help people explore and enjoy the wonderful Caring Garden here at Fieldhead Hospital.

We have a few sessions left and we can't wait to see what's created next. In the meantime if you're visiting the Museum keep an eye out in our Welcome Garden for some brightly coloured pebble critters hiding in the undergrowth!

A few weeks ago we had the official launch of our latest temporary exhibition, 'Take a Load Off' by artist and mental health campaigner Doll. ‘Take A Load Off’ invites its viewers to take a few moments, to rest and reflect on just how much they may be holding for others.

At our meet-the-artist event Doll expertly introduced visitors to somatic drawing, an artform that allows the processing of emotion without words or external demands. As Doll explains, “the act of making allows me to let the thoughts and feelings out in a safe way.... I know what each line means, what each colour represents, and, more importantly, how it felt to put pen to paper or yarn to hook.” .

Doll led a workshop for visitors to explore their own connection to 'Take a Load Off' and many beautiful artworks were created throughout the afternoon. It was particularly lovely to listen to all the happy chat from visitors, service users and South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust staff as the artistic creations took shape.

You can have your own go at somatic art when you visit the Museum over the next few months. 'Take a Load Off' is on now until the end of September. We're free to visit and open to everyone. Call 01924 316360 or email museum@swyt.nhs.uk to find out more!

📣📣📣New object alert! 📣📣📣

We've recently acquired the altar lectern from St Faith's Church, #StanleyRoyd Hospital. This beautifully decorative lectern was saved by staff when St Faith's closed and has been given to us by @allofusinmind Pastoral Care to share with our visitors. You can now find it on display in our Religion and the Hospital cabinet.

If you or someone you know has any objects, records, photographs or memories of the old West Riding Hospitals we'd love to hear from you! As part of Project #safeandsure we're growing our collection to make sure this important heritage is safeguarded for the future. Call 01924 316360 or email museum@swyt.nhs.uk if you'd like to contribute. by @mhmwakefield

Answers were promised and now is the time - did you guess correctly?

The mystery object is Dr Macaura’s Blood Circulator c1900!

Gerald Macaura invented his Blood Circulator in the 1860s. This hand-cranked vibrotherapy device claimed to cure almost all disease by ‘arousing the internal organs into activity’.

The Circulator quickly became a sensation. Public demonstrations showed people with all manner of ailments and disabilities supposedly cured. One lady, reportedly confined to her bath chair for two years, was seen to stand after her treatment and run through the streets pushing her friends in her now redundant bath chair.

Macaura’s claims to be a doctor were later found to be untrue and he was jailed for fraud in France. The effectiveness of his Circulator was called into question and soon fell out of fashion. The Blood Circulator is however an example of the powerful potential of the placebo effect to improve peoples’ health.

Lots more information on Gerald Macaura and his Circulator can be found on the The Old Operating Theatre Museum website https://oldoperatingtheatre.com/doctor-gerald-macauras-blood-circulator/.

Thanks so much to Wakefield Ghost Walk for lending us this amazing device. Visitors can now see the Circulator on display at the Mental Health Museum for the next few months. We're free to visit and open to everyone on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 1-4pm. Call 01924 316360 or email museum@swyt.nhs.uk for more info!
