1. AXE SEINE
At the territorial scale, la Seine, rail and road networks structure Le Havre’s hinterland and connect the port to Paris. Three flows that form the project’s framework, from the HAROPA axis to the site.

2. CENTRE
At the urban scale, the Citadelle sits at the junction between the port and the city centre. A 20-hectare territory, connected to Le Havre’s main urban hubs. Its potential comes from its position between land and sea, but above all, between the city and the port. by @mhstud

We set out to restore this 200-year-old mountain farm in La Clusaz, Haute-Savoie, as a family project with Gwen, our children, and with the precious help of friends and relatives. As an architects and designer with my wife, @gwenaellegrandjean, architect and landscape designer we chose to rebuild it largely by hand, the way things used to be, with patience, care, and a sense of togetherness.

For me, this project is also deeply connected to my lifelong passion for the mountains, a passion I express not only through architecture, but also through my work in outdoor culture and design: the art direction of @zagskis in Chamonix, rebranding @millet_mountain , restoring @aubergeduperebise for @jeansulpice and more recently through the acquisition of @librairiedesalpes in Paris, one of the city’s oldest bookshops on Rue de Seine, dedicated to mountain and outdoor literature. This farm became another way of continuing that relationship with altitude, landscape, and craftsmanship.

From the very beginning, our meeting with the previous owners shaped the project. We wanted to honor their legacy, to walk in their footsteps, and to stay true to the spirit of this high-altitude farm. Our intention was a renovation guided by function before form, echoing the humility of traditional Alpine architecture and the restraint of the Shaker movement, where beauty arises from usefulness and necessity.

We sought a transformation that would not intrude on the vast landscape of the pastures, but would settle into it quietly, as if it had always belonged there. Every gesture, every detail, was guided by purpose: simple solutions, honest materials, and volumes shaped by what the place required ; nothing more, nothing less.

The result stands today: simple, imperfect, and functional, a reflection of our approach and of the time we spent bringing it back to life. We are proud to open it, and we hope we’ve given it another two hundred years beneath these mountains.

Because alone we are nothing and together we are stronger, we were fortunate to have the support of our friend @emmanuel_moussinet as architect of record.

LE HAVRE - "Within the Thickness of the Harbour, Reconnecting the City" Graduation Project, June 2026
1/3 - ROWING CENTER

Students: Alexandre Mendes @mendes__studio, Hipolyte Moussinet @mhstud

École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Versailles @ensa_versailles
Professor: Jean-Christophe Quinton @jcquintonarchitecte

Scale 1:100
Materials: Walnut wood, linden wood, rigid foam

La Citadelle du Havre, a forgotten fragment of the city's industrial and maritime heritage, becomes the starting point of the project, where water is no longer a constraint but its defining condition. Rowing emerged as the program capable of reactivating this obsolete harbor basin while re-establishing a physical and sensory connection between the city and its waterfront. The architecture is conceived as a series of layered interventions : a glued-laminated timber structure rests on blue Vire granite piers, anchored to the basin floor by grouped piles.

The project is designed around the specific movements and rituals of rowing. Public spaces and reception areas are located at city level, while the lower level, in direct contact with the basin, accommodates boat storage and preparation areas. The structural grid becomes a functional framework, organized according to the sequence Rack / Dock / Water, allowing boats to move seamlessly from storage to the water.

Beyond its sporting function, the building becomes a place of encounter for residents, athletes, and visitors alike. A public belvedere walkway crosses the building, offering new views over the basin, rowing activities, and the port landscape. Open to everyone, it transforms a formerly inaccessible industrial waterfront into a new public destination, extending the promenade towards the harbour.

2/3 - HANGAR 21

Students: Alexandre Mendes @mendes__studio, Hipolyte Moussinet @mhstud

École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Versailles @ensa_versailles
Professor: Jean-Christophe Quinton @jcquintonarchitecte

Scale 1:100
Materials: Spray painted cardboard, extruded acrylic

Located along the edge of the Bassin de la Citadelle, this former port warehouse is reimagined to reveal the spatial qualities of its monumental central nave and reconnect it with the waterfront.

The intervention opens up the façades to bring natural light deep into the building, expose the steel roof structure, and establish visual transparency toward the basin. Once inward-looking and enclosed, the warehouse becomes a permeable place, fully connected to its surrounding harbor landscape.

Shared and collective activities take place within an inverted boat hull suspended inside the central nave. This scenographic element draws its inspiration from a vessel found just a few meters away, in a former ship repair facility that has fallen into disuse and serves as the setting for the project's third and final intervention.

Leaning on the enclosure wall of the school in the forest village of Mlomp, the shelter offers a small shaded area for the children. Co-designed and built by students from the architecture schools of Dakar and Versailles, the structure blends local raw-earth construction techniques with contemporary forms.
Backed by the wall and protected from the prevailing winds, the shelter opens onto the courtyard to the west through the filtering colonnade of six masonry piers. Raised above the wall, the timber lattice framework forms a ventilated double roof by capturing cross-breezes through its drapery. Under this cover, a desert fridge keeps snacks cool.
The water collected from the washbasins and cistern is guided along the length of the hall, to the south, irrigating a small garden and its promise of an island of coolness and shade.
