You’re invited!!🦷
So glad to finally announce my first duo show with @yanw___ , curated by @arielllhhheee and @huuuusrcc .

Temporary Storage brings together new work by Mi Chen and Yan Wang, two artists who create objects that ask to be looked at before they are read. Both work through ceramic and language, keeping meaning in suspension. Where Wang stores memory and the missing body, Chen stores language itself, held and slowed before it settles into sense. A shared refusal to resolve, reached from two directions.

Presented by ETA Gallery & Chinese American Arts Council
Location: Gallery 456 | 456 Broadway, 3rd Fl, NYC
Opening Reception: Sept 4, 6-8pm
On view Sept 4-18

Artists: Mi Chen @mi.chen._.s & Yan Wang @awyart
Curators: Ariel He @arielllhhheee & Cicy Hu @huuuusrcc

Convo w/ Mi (Stella) Chen @mi.chen._.s

Q: In your research, you often look at paired or opposing concepts, and in your visual work there’s often a sense of mirroring. What draws you to this way of thinking and making?
A: I’m really drawn to things that feel very straightforward, something you immediately recognize. Like when you see a chair, you just know it’s a chair. There’s no question about it. But at the same time, I’m always thinking about how I can think of a thing from another perspective, and most of the time it involves changing the contexts, putting it in juxtaposition, or make another use of it. Most of the time it ends up being about juxtaposition—just placing two things together and letting the comparison do the work. It kind of opens up another way of seeing the same object without needing to change the object itself.

Q: Among the different mediums you work with, which one do you enjoy the most, and why?
A: Right now I probably enjoy making physical objects a bit more—like drawing with resin or doing woodworking. I just like the process of making something tangible. It slows me down in a good way. I can’t overthink things as much as I do when I’m on my laptop. Unless I’m making type—then I can kind of get into a similar mindset.
