My way of seeing

Hi, I’m Mónica, a photographer from Peru.

I’ve always felt a strong connection to photography, as a way of capturing beauty. Three years ago, I decided to give it a real place in my life, starting with my phone, like many people do, and slowly building a more conscious way of seeing.

I’m drawn to observing and sharing.
Light, silence, spaces, and the people within them.
What usually goes unnoticed.

For me, photography is about pausing, looking more closely, and finding beauty in the simple things.

My work moves between the urban and the natural, without separating them too much.
In the end, it’s all part of the same thing: a pause.

Una noche en Gion Kobu.
Lo que muchos buscan: una maiko camino a su ozashiki.
Lo que pocos miran: el uchimizu. La señora mayor que riega la entrada de su ochaya al atardecer. Un gesto para enfriar la calle, para dar la bienvenida, para limpiar. Un ritual que tiene siglos.
Fotografiadas desde lejos, sin flash, con respeto. En Gion no se persigue, se espera.
Recordatorio: en Gion está prohibido fotografiar a geiko/maiko en calles privadas y acosarlas para una foto. Si las ves, distancia y silencio.

One night in Gion Kobu.
Everyone’s looking for this: a maiko rushing to her ozashiki.
Almost no one notices this: the uchimizu. This older lady watering the entrance of her ochaya at dusk. Just to cool the street. To welcome people in. To clean. It’s been done for centuries.
Shot from far away, no flash, with respect. In Gion you don’t chase — you wait.
Quick reminder: it’s actually forbidden to photograph geiko / maiko on the private alleys in Gion, and to follow them for a shot. If you see one, keep your distance and stay quiet.

5:47 AM. Bosque de Bambú de Arashiyama.
Todos te dicen que vayas temprano. Nadie te dice por qué.
Antes de que llegue la multitud, llegan los monjes. Con escobas de paja y bolsas de lona, en silencio, barriendo el camino que miles pisarán ese día.
Sin show. Sin foto para Instagram. Solo cuidado. Solo ritual.
Me quedé ahí, sintiendo que era una intrusa y a la vez, increíblemente afortunada de presenciarlo.
Este es el espíritu de Japón.

5:47 AM. Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
Everyone tells you to go early. No one tells you why.
Before the crowds, the monks come. With straw brooms and canvas bags, in silence, sweeping the path that thousands will walk that day.
No show. No photo op. Just care. Just ritual.
I stood there feeling like an intruder, and at the same time, incredibly lucky to witness it.
This is the soul of Japan.

398 escalones. Mañana nublada. Sin Mt. Fuji a la vista.
Y aún así, valió cada paso.
Mis primeras fotos de Japón, tenía que empezar aquí: la Pagoda de Chureito. Construida en 1963 no como templo, sino como memorial por la paz. Roja contra el gris, sobre Fujiyoshida, esperando que la niebla se abra.
Japón, recién empezamos.

398 steps. A cloudy morning. No Mt. Fuji in sight.
And still, she was worth every step.
First pics from Japan, and I had to start here: Chureito Pagoda. Built in 1963 not as a temple, but as a peace memorial. Red against the grey, standing above Fujiyoshida, waiting for the fog to clear.

La calma de las 7 am.
Mar tranquilo, bote quieto, y ellos.
Primero 3. Luego 10. Luego toda la fila flotando como si el mar les perteneciera.

En Los Órganos los botes tienen dos dueños, pescadores y pelícanos.

Flat sea, still boat, and they arrive.
First 3. Then 10. Then the whole line floating like the sea belongs to them.

In Los Órganos boats don’t belong only to fishermen. They belong to pelicans too.

El día se va pero nunca se despide igual.

En Los Órganos el sol nunca se esconde discreto, se derrama. Naranja, rosa, fuego sobre el agua. Los botes ya están en tierra, las aves ya volvieron. Queda solo la luz.

Guarda este atardecer para cuando necesites volver al mar.

The day goes, but it never says goodbye the same.

In Los Órganos the sun never hides quietly, it spills. Orange, pink, fire over water. Boats are already ashore, birds have returned. Only light remains.

Save this sunset for when you need to return to the sea.

A 40cm de un dinosaurio.
Ojo claro, pico con historia. Lo salvaje no está lejos.

Este es el pelícano peruano (Pelecanus thagus). Vive solo en la corriente de Humboldt y en los últimos años ha perdido más del 70% de su población. Su bolsa puede guardar 3 veces más que su estómago, y su familia lleva pescando en esta costa desde el Mioceno.

40cm away from a dinosaur.
Pale eye, beak full of stories. Wild is not far.

This is the Peruvian pelican (Pelecanus thagus), found only along the Humboldt Current. It has lost over 70% of its population in recent decades. Its pouch holds 3x its stomach, and its lineage has fished this coast since the Late Miocene.

Hombres de mar
Los que salen cuando los peces llaman.
Don Felipe. 6 am. Bote verde, llantas de defensa, sombrero gastado. Sin filtro, sin pose.
Esta es la parte del mar que no siempre fotografiamos.

Seamen
They set out when the fish call. Don Felipe, 6am — green boat, tire fenders, weathered hat. No filter. No pose. This is the side of the sea we rarely photograph.
