A few weeks ago, MAGMA won the Grand Jury Award in the International First Feature Competition at @sheffdocfest .
It was the very first time we shared the film with the world, and we couldn’t have dreamed of a warmer welcome.
A huge thank you to the entire Sheffield DocFest team for making space for MAGMA, believing in the film, and welcoming us with such warmth and care. Special thanks to @raulninoz , @mita.suri , @kumekumar , and everyone behind the scenes who made those few days so unforgettable.
Thank you to the jury, Paul Sng, Darren Lawford and Malikkha Rollins for this incredible recognition and for championing the film. We were deeply honored by their words.
Sheffield was also my very first Q&A as a filmmaker. I couldn’t have wished for a better person to share that moment with than @robin_hoohood . Thank you for your thoughtful questions and for making me feel at home on that stage.
We met extraordinary filmmakers, old friends @mharperarts and new friends. We left inspired, hopeful, and incredibly proud to represent the SWANA region alongside with other amazing award-winning filmmakers @janayboulos @abd_alkader_habak @wafamoustafa @waadalkateab 🫶🏼
We still find ourselves thinking about the warmth of the audiences, the conversations that continued long after the screenings, and the feeling of finally sharing a film that had lived with us for so many years.

MAGMA, the debut feature documentary by French-Algerian filmmaker Mia Bendrimia, will have its MENA premiere at the 47th Cairo International Film Festival (11–20 November 2026), competing in Horizons of Arab Cinema and for the Best Documentary Film Award.

The film follows Bendrimia as she uncovers her Algerian family’s ties to both sides of the War of Independence, exploring the silences around the colonial past and how they pass between generations.

MAGMA won the Grand Jury Award in the International First Feature Competition at Sheffield DocFest in June. Bendrimia, who lived in Cairo for two years, will attend the festival to present the film. by @mia_bendream

Spanning Algeria and France, ‘Magma’ follows Mia as she sets out to understand how colonialism tore her family apart. The deeper she digs, the more contradictions she finds, with each revelation raising new questions rather than settling old ones. What begins as an investigation into family taboos opens out into something far more personal and complex, as buried histories collide with the life she’s living now.

MAGMA fait sa première en France !

Après sa première mondiale au Sheffield DocFest, où il a remporté le Grand Prix du Jury de la compétition internationale des premiers longs métrages, MAGMA fera sa première française au Festival Le Grand Bivouac, à Albertville, dans le cadre de la compétition internationale.

Deux projections sont prévues :

Since we first began pitching MAGMA, something has kept happening.

Whenever we showed excerpts from the film, people would come and speak to us afterwards. Some laughed, some cried (some did both), and many began telling us about their own families.

Some said the film made them want to ask their relatives questions. Others regretted not having done so when they still had the chance.

Their stories were all different, but many touched on colonisation, exile or migration; on living between two worlds and missing family; on searching for stories that had never been passed down, and living with the questions those silences had left behind.

At @sheffdocfest , we shared the full film with an audience for the first time. Here are a few of the conversations that followed.

We are very grateful to everyone who spoke to us so openly and trusted us with part of their story. Sharing something so personal and then listening to others share their own experiences has been one of the most meaningful parts of making this film. by @mia_bendream

Every member of the Agora team welcomed us with exceptional warmth and care for each project, creating a space where filmmakers could not only pitch and network, but also breathe, reflect and support one another.

Next stop: Rough Cut Lab Africa.

@rclafrica is organized in partnership with the @encountersdoc Film Festival, the @editorsguildsa and the @nfvfsa

This lab was a precious opportunity for us to take a step back, reflect on the film, and discuss it together with @nassim.ouadi as a directing-editing team.

We were honored to receive the @aljazeeradocumentary award.

Organized by @doc.house.tunisie Point Doc brings together filmmakers and industry professionals from across North Africa, the Arab world and beyond.

We were honored to receive the Best Pitch Award, a huge encouragement at a crucial stage of the project.

The first time we were give the opportunity to pitch the project.
The first award we received!  And the beginning of many friendships that are still part of the film’s journey today.
