AD DIY BANQUETTE SEATING

I can’t believe we made this 🤯 I took a while to design it and figure out what I wanted, then it was mostly down to Will to magic up what was in my head, as per usual 😁👏🏻 He actually did most of it because I was trying to finish the pantry door and shelves whilst he did this!

I wanted it to have a bit of interest so decided to clad it all in @easipanel as it slots together so easily, and adds a nice traditional touch. The dado rail made the perfect trim along the top and hides the speaker that’s hidden inside.

We spent AGES looking at the correct dimensions to make it a comfortable seat, here’s what we went with, and can confirm it’s a great height for the table.

Measurements:
Seat depth including lip: 48cm
Total depth from back of wall to skirting: 61cm
Seat height: 38cm
Totally height inc 8cm cushion: 46cm (if you’re not doing a cushion, do it this height)
Length: 250cm
Back angle: 95 degrees
Total back height: 100cm

Materials:
Base frame: 3x2 CLS
Back framework: 9mm plywood
Cladding for base and back: 9mm plywood (we used a bit of leftover ash we had from the island but wouldn’t use that normally)
Sides and seat: 18mm MDF
Panelling and dado trim: @easipanel

The colour is Masquerade by @littlegreenepaintcompany which works perfectly with Julie’s Dream on the walls and Masquerade Light on the rest of the woodwork in this room. I love how it feels like a feature, yet works so harmoniously with the other shades.

It’s really hard to get all the information and close up in a reel that’s not suuuper long so if you have any questions, leave them in the comments and I’ll reply, that way it should help others too.
I have photos of each step so I’m putting together a post with those, which should help with close ups and be easier to pause… but bear with me!

House tour 🩵

I know I see it every day, but it’s quite nice seeing it all together like this in photos, makes me realise how much we’ve actually done ☺️

The last bedroom currently doesn’t look like this, it has a makeshift bed in it, but also random pieces of furniture, my shoes, a rail of my clothes and a cupboard full of trinkets. That’s a next year job, along with the old kitchen that sits below it.

We’ve added a temporary set up to the utility room with running water, installed the radiator and washing machine and that’s how it will stay for a couple of years. As with most renovations, we didn’t have money to do everything at once, and we’re lucky to even have this space so I don’t care what it looks like, as long as it’s good enough for building control to sign off!

We’re currently working on our en-suite and main bedroom but the green bedroom was the one we did first, over two years ago. We always knew it would be a guest room but it made sense to do the rooms at the front of the house first. We’re aiming for July for a finished en-suite and plastered bedroom, so we’ll see how that goes 🤞🏻

DIY KITCHEN ISLAND FAQ
I’ve had some questions about the kitchen island so thought I’d put a post together with them all.
I designed and drew it with all the measurements, inspired a lot by Pinterest! I matched all the rail and frame measurements to the kitchen cabinets we had ordered to keep it looking consistent. We didn’t have the budget for one and Will said he’d give it a go, and here we are.
Will did all the research on the wood to use based on price and the colour we wanted to stain it in the end and decided on ash. We ordered the rails in strips cut to size to avoid having to cut them all down.

It saved us so much money, but we did splurge on the worktop. I wanted it to feel and look like a freestanding piece of furniture so we opted for an aged brass that will patina more with age.

I have videos/photos of all the steps so let me know if you’d like me to share.

P.S. Did you spot the sneak peek of the seating I’ve not shared yet? 🤫

September 🩵
I feel like I didn’t sit down, but it was a fun month!

Hoping for a slightly more chilled October, and for the en-suite to finally be finished. Just waiting on the shower screen and then I can show you! 🙌🏻 by @miafelce

Some little captures of when our house has been tidy, recently. Don’t be fooled, it’s a rare occasion 😂
We were storing all the en-suite stuff in the living room, including loads of skirting boards, architraves, vanity unit, toilet, sink… so it was impossible to sit in there; so it’s nice to finally have that room back. It’s still a bit of a storage room, but at least I can get to the sofa!

We’re loving having the new curtains up in the kitchen too, it’s made such a difference to the room.

Hope you have a lovely weekend 🩵

We have settlement cracks 😭
The panelling in the downstairs toilet has pulled away from the wall slightly leaving a slight crack all along the wall. I think this was actually from the drastic change in temperatures but as it’s wallpapered, you can’t really just caulk it!

I went for a delightful Afternoon Cheese at The Covent Garden Hotel a couple of months ago and noticed the bright pink ribbon detail around the base of the wallpaper in their very jazzy ladies bathrooms.

I thought this would be a great way to try and hide the cracks, so went on a search for ribbon. I don’t wish to know the amount of hours I spent searching for the right one. I looked at stripes, various colours and patterns and it’s really hard to choose colours online as you just don’t know if they’re true to real life. I settled on this airforce blue as it looked a similar tone to the panelling. I do wish it was a little lighter but the colour itself works and it wasn’t returnable, so of course I just went with this.

I’m not recommending the glue I used as it’s coming away a bit, I used temporary not repositionable 🫠

It’s a great, affordable little hack if you need to hide any imperfect wallpaper installations or just want to add another pop of colour or pattern.

What do you think? 👀

DIY hidden curtain track.

I’m not going to lie, this is a tricky one to retrofit if you already have cornicing/coving as it’ll be hard to find something that matches, but it is super easy if you’re planning a new space or extension, you just need to think about it at the beginning.
If you don’t have existing cornice/coving, it’s a lot easier, you just need to make sure you’ve got something to fix up into, especially if you’re thinking of opting for heavy curtains.

It was hard to fit all the info into the video so I’ve added more info below. I also forgot to film some steps, classic me, sorry 🤣 Let me know if you have any questions and don’t forget to save for later!

Measurements:
Gap from wall - 105mm
(If you want to do a wave header instead, make sure you allow enough depth for this, it will be more than this). You need to make sure your chosen curtains will fit - ours are very thin with no lining.
Front face - Cornice height, plus 1cm
MDF thickness - 18mm

Tips:
- Paint the inside of the MDF before you attach the curtain track.
- Make sure you add the gliders before you fix the track to the MDF.

Details:
Cornice: Egg & Dart 80mm from @screwfix (polyurethane).
Attached using Supercove Adhesive. If you use plaster, you’ll have to glue screw it because it’s heavier.
Curtains: @laredoute

Hidden cornice curtain track?
Because I think I live in a fancy hotel or something 🤪

I planned this over two years ago so to finally have curtains here is amazing. I chose a thin cotton fabric that still lets the light through, but is enough to close off the darkness at night.

It’s East facing so these will stop me being blinded on summer mornings ☀️

I filmed a few clips when we made it last year but of course I missed off a few steps, but it’s pretty simple and I’ve put together a reel, so I’m calling it a mini tutorial. I’ll be honest, it’s hard to retrofit if you already have cornicing or coving, but it’s not impossible! Bay windows might be tricky though! Follow for part 2 on Thursday 😊

DIY fabric magnetic board 🙌🏻
The non-tutorial tutorial 😂

I love my built in fridge but it means there nowhere to put magnets, invitations, photos and random things you’d usually stick on there, so I made a mini magnetic board.

I’ll be honest, I couldn’t be bothered to re-do it but it would have been way easier to just spray the metal sheet with spray glue, place the fabric on top then put it into the frame, so do as I say, not as I do 😂 I just grabbed the masking tape because it was in the cupboard, it doesn’t look pretty but it did the job 😂

I love adding a bit of pattern and fabric and this felt a bit more ‘me’ than the stainless steel ones you can buy.

I’ve added the metal sheet link to my DIY links highlight. If you go for a different one, make sure it’s magnetic!

What do you think? 👀

Someone recently commented “so it’s not practical at all” when I said it can only be wiped down with soapy water. We have a green cloth for soapy water only (we use washing up liquid and it’s fine), and a pink cloth for disinfectant; it’s really not that hard. It’s either the most high maintenance or low maintenance depending on how you look at it, but it’s a living material and you really just need to embrace it.

Cons
Can’t use chemical cleaners
Scratches and marks easily
Foods can strip back patina
Expensive
Max sheet size determines joints

Pros
Naturally antimicrobial
Wipes easily with water and soap
Adds warmth to a space
Patinas over time
Marks blend in quickly

I had done research before we bought it, so I knew all these things, but it does scratch more easily than I thought it would and this happening by pure accident the first week was a bit of a shock!

So, do I regret them?
NOPE.
Every marks creates a story, a lived in look and I love the warmth it adds to the kitchen. You really don’t notice all the small marks because they blend together and fade away so quickly.

So, did know this about brass worktops? And would you add it to your kitchen? 👀 by @miafelce

I am always on the hunt for a little souvenir. I always keep a coaster, buy a postcard, a little print, or in this case, keep the cool key card holder from The Hoxton 😁

We don’t buy each other wedding anniversary gifts, we go away for a night or the weekend instead, so this was from a night in London last year.

I have a box full of little memories and I’m slowly starting to frame or display them around the house. It’s so easy and cheap, and I think things like this make a home feel more personal. It’s nice to be reminded of all the memories when you walk past!

Do you keep random things, or is it just me? 😂

Ad I love having a runner in our kitchen. It adds cosiness and warmth, but the one I chose first had a cream base and wasn’t washable, and in a busy kitchen that wasn’t the wisest of all my choices! You definitely can have a runner, just make sure you choose a washable one, like this one from @hug__rug rug new collection with @grahamandbrown . I’ve chosen the ‘Tapestry’ design in Smoke, a lovely pink colour.

Choosing a pattern adds character and colour, but also helps to hide any spills until it’s time to wash it!

I’ve also chosen the same ‘Tapestry’ design in the Linen shade for under our sofa. We still get a lot of dusty footprints through the kitchen from all the renovation work, and as we start work on the patio in the autumn, it will be really handy to be able to wash it, should it get any dusty or muddy footprints.

They’re both washable at 30 degrees and can be popped in the washing machine for ease. They’re also made in the UK and have a non-slip rubber backing.

If you’re thinking of getting a runner for your kitchen, you absolutely can! It’s the perfect way to introduce a pop of colour and pattern and adds an element of softness.
