‘ What a lark to just go for it on a canvas, throwing precision to the wind! Here I thought my tide pool painting was spontaneous - it seems positively tame by comparison. Seeing them together reminds me of the film Six Degrees of Separation (watch if you haven’t), with the double-sided painting “chaos control.” ‘

Bit of a preamble… When it comes to control, some might call me a supa freak. Schedules, definitive plans, executing on a specific creative vision — I’m into it all.

The weighted blanket of illusory security feels cozy AF ‘til you realize it’s actually smothering you.

This post is about sharing recent pieces with no connective tissue. No cohesive idea. No plan forward. Nothing precise. No deadline to refine, complete, or make a better version.

I’m finding just what I need in not needing certainty.

And yes, the guy in sketch 4 looks like his balls are hanging to the floor. It’s a mistake. I’m not fixing it :) by @miaharlock

Chair No. 3, reseated with various cord, yarn, twine, and ribbon - replete with hanging tassels! Felt like a sacrilege using the song Thieves Like Us to soundtrack anything other than the pre-prom montage in Pretty in Pink - but it got me thinking about the film and character Andie, a teenager from the wrong side of the tracks who crafts her clothes and self confidence from limited resources, hard work, ingenuity, integrity, and creativity. She’s still an inspiration for my life and art. Hope young girls today see versions of Andie on their big and little screens. by @miaharlock

After our unsuccessful indoor photo shoot last week, battling shadows, Chair No. 2 requested al fresco shots so into the garden we went.

To restore her attire and structural integrity, Chair 2 was sanded, painted (in places), and reseated with yarn, various cord, ribbon, twine and leather.

Behold! The primera chair of my new series. As an empathic, neighborhood scavenger, I couldn’t help rehousing every charming, seatless chair I’ve encountered, knowing someday I’d tend to their seat.

Here I’ve used various cord, yarn, twine, ribbons, unseen nautical knots, and eye-poppin’ paint for good measure. Chair #1, and others to come, are for sale so DM if interested! by @miaharlock

Hey all you San Jose & South Bay’ers! SAUS is coming for ya....

Saturday, April 11th, 1-4pm we’re bringing the heat to San Pablo Square Market — one of our favorite outdoor venues.

What to expect? A daytime dance party packed with 70s grooves, 80s fire + all the food & drink your heart desires (15 food stalls, 4 bars, 2 cafes).

For folks in other parts of the Bay… “Do you know the way to San Jose?” Excellent. We’ll see you cats there too.

Often feels like I’m jumping out of a cake naked when I share paintings or music on Insta, but what’s a gal to do… So here I am shouting (somewhat timidly) from the digital rafters! FOLIE Á DEUX — a song I wrote, sang on, and produced — is officially out on the music apps: Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora / SXM, YouTube, etc.

If you’re digging this sonic slice, listen in full with earbuds or blast ‘er from decent speakers.

Most importantly… I did not do this alone! Begged for help from these exceptionally talented humans and boy did they deliver.

@alexisarkusduntov – Bass
@gabe.echeverria – Guitar
@bay_walkies – Chorus strings
Neil Godbole @airshiplaboratories - Mix / Mastering

While I’ve got you here, thought I’d share songs that inspired Folie à Deux - not always overtly - some just a feeling, instrument choice, or enviable production.

Thank you for listening (and adding it to a playlist 😉). by @miaharlock

Not sure which feels holier - all these dusty sun-bleached fades and enduring, monster succulents or their Christian counterparts.

Late 90s / early naaaughties NYC. Subsisting on Yaffa salads, $2 pizza slices, and Tecate specials (beer + well shot). Mind-numbing temp jobs then tears and Manolos at Vogue. Trudging through days to live at night. CBH’s (cute boy highs) at the Cherry Tavern, Sweet Thang hip hop on Canal, Beaver at Don Hills dancing to Morrisey and Iggy Pop, comedy at Fez, Marnie at open mic, Alexis in his tower DJ booth at Moomba, skaters at Spoon and Max Fish. Hair of the dog pints at St Dymphnas. Freezing our tits off in the Houston loft. Sweating bullets on St Marks with no A/C. Lazy meanders through Tompkins and Washington Sq parks. Thrifting like it was our job (well for a time, it was my job). Seeing bands like Built to Spill, Cat Power, and Outcast for the first time. Leaving bars at 4am (unfathomable), falling asleep at 6, waking up to the chants of Hare Krishnas in the courtyard below before work at 9am. Too much fun and heaps of 20-something emotional muck. Friends’ kids are now venturing east to sow their wild oats (and study a bit hopefully!) Long may the NYC cycle continue.

I have Amy Larocca and Alex White to blame for my brief “real person” modelling days (literally 2 days) for New York Magazine and the 2001 Burberry campaign. Oh, also the Javits Center Hair show (got paid $100). And yes, I chose that haircut. by @miaharlock
