Great night Saturday @miamilightproject . Congratulations to Beth Boone and the Miami and Johannesburg artists for an extraordinary collaboration with the Centre for the Less Good Idea @lessgoodidea . Thanks to @crearte_org @perezfamilyfoundation and others for supporting this project.

The evening demonstrated how little it can take to conjure an entire world: a cheap grocery store plastic bag and a microphone became the most credible sound and images of crashing waves; voices, sound, movement, and simple gestures became puppets and other stories. Minimal technology, maximum imagination.

Thanks, Beth, for always supporting and bringing news forms of experimentation, collaboration, and possibility to Miami. by @miamilightproject

Miami Light Project is thrilled to announce the Here & Now: 2027 commissioned artists!

Miami Light Project launched Here & Now as a commissioning program for multidisciplinary performing artists in 1999, as the first program of its kind in South Florida, dedicated to commissioning and presenting Miami-based performance and multimedia artists. Since its inception, we have commissioned work from over 150 artists, contributing to Miami‘s recognition as a cultural center of international significance.

Here and Now commissioned artists are identified through an open call for proposals. Projects are selected through an adjudication process completed by a panel of arts professionals including the MLP Programs Team, Here & Now Alumni, community-based cultural colleagues and other working artists.

Join us as we celebrate the next wave of individuals who are among Miami’s freshest and most exciting artists!

Miami-based singer-songwriter Ayme Canto and Cuban-born multidisciplinary artist Miri Páez Bolet unite music, storytelling, and visual art to reimagine Caribbean heritage, blending bolero, jazz, archival research, illustration, and Cuban musical history.

Barbara Caridad Meulener is a first-generation Cuban-American multidisciplinary artist from Miami working across dance, film, and performance. She has performed with Rosie Herrera Dance Theater and Pioneer Winter Collective. Her films GOZA and Behind the Tease explore identity, collective creation, and social change.

Dani Amaro is a vocalist, composer, and music educator whose interdisciplinary practice draws from Brazilian and Cuban heritage. A National YoungArts Jazz Voice alum, Dani incorporates improvisation, storytelling, and folklore into original work presented at venues including Pérez Art Museum Miami, Faena Forum, YoungArts, and The High Line.

James Balo is a Queer, Black, Haitian-Jamaican multidisciplinary artist and storyteller born in Little Haiti and raised in Miami’s Caribbean communities. A U.S. Presidential Scholar in the Arts and YoungArts Finalist, Balo’s work has been presented at the Kennedy Center and Adrienne Arsht Center.
