Meet Catalina, our permanent resident! 🦜

Catalina is a 10-month-old female Catalina macaw, and she lives here at Miami Wild Exotics. She's not for sale; she's family.

What's a Catalina macaw? She's a hybrid of a Scarlet macaw and a Blue and Gold macaw. You won't find Catalinas in the wild. They're bred by people, which is why every one has her own mix of red, orange, green, blue and gold. Her parent species come from the rainforests of Central and South America.

Diet: a quality pellet as the base, plus fresh vegetables, some fruit, and a few nuts as treats. Never feed avocado, chocolate, caffeine or salty foods, because they're toxic to parrots.

Lifespan: with good care, macaws can live 50 years or more, so many outlive their owners.

Maturity: they're usually sexually mature at around 3 to 5 years old.

Brains: macaws are among the smartest birds on Earth. They can learn words, solve puzzles, wave, turn around, and even recognize the people they love. Their beaks are strong enough to crack nuts, but gentle enough to preen a friend.

Come say hi to Catalina when we open! 💚
