Really proud to have worked on this piece for @audubonsociety that publishes in their fall issue. Jeff VanderMeer is a best-selling author and activist, a man whose books like Annihilation and Hummingbird Salamander have had The New Yorker dub him “the weird Thoreau.” We (@kaylathecat with the assist!) stayed with VanderMeer and his wife at their home in Tallahassee earlier this year to take in some of his rewilding project, a passion of his over the last several years. Jessica Bruder wrote a fantastically interesting story with funny anecdotes and stark observations from VanderMeer, who seems to come by them naturally. Can’t thank Sabine Meyer and crew at Audubon Magazine enough for the call, edit and support through the assignment.#trs_members by @micahgreen15

Went down to College Park for the New York Times to spend a few hours with Marie Gallashaw and her boyfriend Mark Hughes as the two navigated one of the last days before the federal eviction moratorium is lifted tonight. Gallashaw, a home health nurse and military veteran, saw her patient count fall dramatically at the beginning of the pandemic when retirement homes began denying all outside visitors. She now cares for a single patient. Hughes was getting more than 40 hours a week cleaning planes at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, but was laid off when air travel all but stopped. He got a job a few months later working at a Pepsi distribution hub but the damage was done. Sophie Kasakove’s important reporting below and more at nytimes.com. “The moratorium has shielded struggling renters from eviction whether they lived in public or private housing, as long as they could prove they had lost income during the pandemic, attempted to obtain rental assistance and made an effort to pay as much rent as possible.For many renters and advocates the expiration has a particularly painful sting because only a small fraction of the rent assistance approved by Congress has been distributed. Many small landlords have been anxiously awaiting the funds, too, as bills pile up.Some cities and states, including California and New York, have their own eviction moratoriums that will outlast the federal one, but many renters will be left to rely on assistance funds. Through June, however, local governments had distributed just $3 billion of the nearly $47 billion in rental assistance that Congress made available, according to the Treasury Department. Reporting by Bloomberg’s Mark Niquette. — The US trade deficit widened in May as a broad-based increase in imports and a decline in exports propelled the gap to the most in more than a year.The gap in goods and services trade grew 42.2% from the prior month to $77.6 billion, Commerce Department data showed Tuesday. The median estimate in a Bloomberg survey of economists called for a $78.4 billion deficit.Exports fell 3.2% by value in May, driven by a drop in the volatile nonmonetary gold category. Imports rose 3.3% to the highest level since March 2025, in the lead up to President Donald Trump’s sweeping tariffs announced the following month.The wider deficit follows months in which oil and petroleum exports, boosted by the Iran war, have helped offset an ongoing surge in imports of capital goods tied to the buildout of data centers in the US. The broader jump in imports in May could reflect a rush to bring goods into the country ahead of additional tariffs, according to Sal Guatieri, a senior economist at BMO Capital Markets.“For a change, the increase wasn’t led by surging purchases of computer hardware and microchips,” Guatieri said in a note. “Sturdy domestic demand and a firmer dollar are likely supporting factors.” by @micahgreen15

The Candid Frame was the first photography podcast I ever listened to and still one of the few. It’s been such an education for me, introducing me to countless photographers, their work and process and letting me hear from others that I’ve looked up to in one way or another. When @ibarionex asked Kayla and I to be on the show, I couldn’t say yes fast enough.To get to talk about how we think about local journalism (the little j and the big J) and visual storytelling on TCF was surreal (and a little nerve wracking), but luckily I got to do it alongside my brilliant wife who kept us grounded and unsurprisingly carried the team again. A trip 23 miles out into the Gulf to see the Argosy VI sunk, becoming one of Alabama’s largest artificial reefs. The 408-foot long, 80-foot wide former Indiana casino boat was originally brought to Alabama by Orange Beach developer Larry Wireman with plans to transform it into a hotel and restaurant. After several roadblocks derailed those ideas, Wireman sold it to the state. Over the last year plus, the ship has undergone rigorous environmental cleaning to remove any hazardous materials and was stripped down to the steel. Craig Newton, with Alabama Marine Resources Division, told me he expects the reef to provide critical habitat for decades. “It’ll be an extremely diverse reef, mainly because of the verticality, as well as the small-scale complexity that’s associated with it,” he said. “We anticipate roughly 30 to 50 years of expected life of providing quality habitat for different reef fishes.”Alabama’s nearshore Gulf waters are mostly made up of unstructured, sandy/soft-bottom sediment rather than natural hard formations. There are only three known natural hard-bottom areas in the region: Trysler Grounds (south of Perdido Pass), Southwest Rock (south of Dauphin Island) and the Southeast Banks (off Fort Morgan). Everything else is open, structureless seafloor, which is why artificial reefs have had to fill that gap since the 1950s. For @gulfcoastnews by @micahgreen15
