The history of theriantropes and anthromorphism can be traced back to cave paintings and ancient greek mythology.

In the Victorian era, pets became a symbol of social status and prosperity. Pet photography became increasingly popular amongst wealthy victorians, leading photographers to start specializing in portraits of cats, dogs, and other animals.

Pioneers of pet photography at this time were English photographer Harry Pointer, and American photographer Harry Whittier Frees. Frees was known for his photographs of animals dressed in human clothing and posed in human like situations.

Pointer began by taking conventional photographs of his pet cats resting, drinking milk or sleeping in a basket then later positioning them to mimic human like activities. Later adding captions to his photographs which sky rocketed his success.
