Today is a good day to be on this side of the dirt! Thank you for all the Birthday Wishes. I celebrated it early with a couple of pops on the beach! I did not get the savage tan that the lotion promised…Jill did tho! We are back home in Tucson! by @michael_dowling68

Day 513 | The Daily Grit | The Days That Don’t Need Lessons

Yesterday we visited the Kīlauea. I cannot tell you how different it is in person, vs even the highest quality video on the biggest screen. Nothing can compare to seeing it in real time…the view, the scale…the ground under your feet as you simply walk. The only thing better is seeing it with someone you love.

We didn’t imagine we’d see anything that could come close to that experience…for a while. And then…as we took the northern loop back over Saddle Road…we broke through the clouds as we came up to Mauna Kea access road 15 minutes to sunset.

If you ever have a chance to experience a Hawai’i sunset above the clouds on Mauna Kea…take it. (I could have used a warm jacket).

It was a beautiful day.

Some days don’t need a lesson. They are the lesson.

Jill and I stood at the edge of something that’s been building for millions of years. My timeline means nothing to it. How we feel is meaningless. It was here long before us and it’ll be here long after. And that is a thought that puts everything into perspective.

You spend so much time building urgency around everything. Then you stand next to a volcano and realize the earth has been doing its work without a single leadership team meeting.

No lesson today. Just the photos. Just the gratitude for being insignificant…and in the right place at the right time.

🙏
1️⃣ Grateful for Kīlauea - experiencing the most powerful things on earth will change you.
2️⃣ Grateful for a sunset above the clouds I’ll never forget.
3️⃣Grateful for yesterday. All of it.

Keep pushing. Keep pivoting. Do hard things.

Day 511 | The Daily Grit | The Nothing Burger

Saturday…Kona, Hawaii. Hurricane Day.

Nolo bumped west overnight. No rain. No wind. A nothing burger. And honestly? An amazing gift.

Yesterday I told you the weather is the weather. Today the weather is still the weather…but says: relax. I’ll take that win!

Sometimes the thing you are bracing for, that you are sure is coming… never arrives. The deal falls through…but in your favor. The hard conversation you stressed about turns out to be easy. The hurricane goes west…like a sharp left turn.

You don’t get those hours of worry back. But you do get to choose what you do with the relief. I’m thinking an Iowa / Michigan game at Humpy’s..ok…Laverne’s now (if you know, you know).

🙏
1️⃣ Grateful for storms that miss.
2️⃣ Grateful for a Saturday with nothing to brace for and everything to enjoy.
3️⃣ Grateful for Jillie-bean to ride out these “storms” with.

Keep pushing. Keep pivoting. Do hard things.
