Exhibition: 'Raining Blood – Photography and Arms Trafficking' opens at the Weltmuseum Wien, curated by Dr. Hanin Hannouch. 29 September 2026 – 18 April 2027

With 'Raining Blood: Photography and Arms Trafficking' the Weltmuseum Wien explores the international arms trade around 1900 and its legacy, which is closely linked to colonialism and imperialism. The exhibition uses the arms trade of this era as a lens through which to portray war and armed conflicts in all their profoundly ambivalent nature within the museum’s collection.

Featuring contemporary artworks by Sama Alshaibi, Baptist Coelho, Jittagarn Kaewtinkoy, Elene Kajaia, Peter Kennard, Minouk Lim, Cristina Lucas, Michael MacGarry, Tiara Roxanne, Jakkai Siributr, and Abdullah M.I. Syed. @weltmuseumwien

"Between” | Group exhibition at Verduyn Gallery, Belgium | 5 September – 18 October 2026

Verduyn Gallery, Belgium is proud to present the group exhibition 'Between' – bringing together a group of artists whose practices reflect the shared outlook of both galleries: firmly rooted in their local contexts while engaging in a broader global dialogue.

Between is a recognition of multitudes. There is nothing, or no one, that can easily be encapsulated into an all-encompassing definition. Everything flows and shifts between phases, dithering between semblances of coherence. It is in this perceived ‘in-betweeness’ that Verduyn brings these diverse practices together to create an engaging dialogue. Verduyn Gallery is a distinguished platform for contemporary art based in Belgium, dedicated to fostering dialogue between emerging and internationally established artists with the vision and potential to shape the global art landscape.

Everard Read Gallery x FNB Art Joburg
Sandton Convention Centre | 03-06 September 2026

Everard Read returns to FNB Art Joburg with a vibrant presentation of new and recent work by artists from across the gallery’s extensive programme. In Johannesburg, a city built on reinvention and sustained by resilience – at a moment when uncertainty often dominates the conversation, this gallery showcase looks elsewhere: towards possibility. The future is first imagined before it is made.

The work 'Haunted by Modernism' – from my ongoing Tontine series – features a skeletal protagonist, crowned with a bear trap and framed by a stage set in the mode of the International Style, casually inhabiting its geometric, primary-coloured cage. The myopic optimism of Modernist architecture is revisited with the suspicion that its ghosts never really moved out. The skeleton of the architect lingers among its clean lines like an inconvenient tenant, assembled from the discarded packaging paper of an economy that continues to confuse consumption with progress. Salvaged packaging paper carries the memory of labour more convincingly than concrete ever carried mid-century utopias. The crown, toucan and suburban façade each perform their assigned roles with admirable professionalism, despite the circumstances. The work proposes that history rarely disappears; it simply renovates itself, changes the colour scheme and quietly increases the rent.

In Focus: Michael MacGarry

𝘔𝘐𝘎𝘏𝘛𝘠 𝘔𝘈𝘕 (𝘐𝘚𝘚𝘜𝘌 17), 2025
Reclaimed packaging paper, acrylic screen print and cotton
132.2 x 122 cm

Michael MacGarry examines colonial histories, mining legacies, and systems of power. Often drawing on South Africa’s colonial and apartheid past, his work interrogates how historical narratives are constructed and how ideologies continue to shape public space and collective memory.

MacGarry’s Mighty Man (Issue 17) is an acrylic screenprint of a scene from the original comic, on a canvas made from reclaimed packaging paper.

Despite being drawn from a particular historical reference, the imagery – a corrupt politician, an angry mob, a moment of vindication, a flurry of cash – is easily transposed into the contemporary South African society, highlighting the often surprising and unexpected persistence of cultural elements, narratives, and stories. taken in Cape Town, South Africa by @michael_macgarry
