I get folks asking me all the time what seat I’m running for and if they can vote for me. If you’ve asked me this question, you know I start drawing an outline of our district in the air, but I think this graphic does a much better job! Our district is pretty big and encompasses all or part of 8 counties. If you live in Knox, Blount, Loudon, Claiborne, Union, Grainger, and parts of Campbell and Jefferson county - you’re in this district! We’ve got a lot of new folks here so I wanted to take the time to share a little bit about me 👋I’m Michaela Barnett - East Tennessean, scientist, small business owner, stepping up to run for a seat that hasn’t changed parties since reconstruction. But most of all, I’m someone who believes that we the people deserve power. That our government shouldn’t be bought and paid for by the few. That hard work should give you a step up. That things are broken - but that we have a chance to fix them if we work together. A few other fun facts to get to know the person behind the candidate: 🌻I grew the tallest sunflower that placed first at our local county fair as a kid, and I continue to love gardening. I don’t have a lot of time for it, but if you live in my neighborhood there’s a good chance you’ll see me working outside when I get a spare 10 minutes! 👩🏻‍🌾 I’ve had a lot of jobs: nanny, magazine editor, farmhand, restaurant server, Spanish teacher, trip leader, and research and teaching assistant, to name a few. ♻️When I was in high school, I started multiple recycling programs and spent field days sorting trash into landfill and recyclables to my teachers’ amusement and possible chagrin. Keeping material out of our landfills has been a lifelong obsession. 🛠️ I love to build, remodel, sew, crochet, weave - I’m really grateful my parents taught me to use power tools as a kid and that my mom taught me to sew and crochet. Actually when I first got to Knoxville I wanted to learn more building skills, so I asked a local construction company if I could tag along on their job sites - and they said yes! I’m sure it was amusing but I got some good drywall skills. 🫂My big family spans the political spectrum, as I know is the case for so many of you. Navigating these differences can be hard and painful and messy, but we love and respect each other and choose to keep showing up. I don’t always get it right, but I’m trying to practice asking more questions rather than just try to bludgeon folks into my point of view. Welcome to the movement we’re building. Tim raised and spent more the last quarter than he ever has before, including almost $600,000 on *out-of-state* political consultants. You don’t drop that kind of money on political consultants against an opponent you’re not worried about. We spend less than a tenth of that every month to run this entire campaign, and it's already got him running scared. Imagine the kind of campaign we’ll be able to run as we continue to hit our increasingly ambitious fundraising goals. Speaking of which, we need to DOUBLE what we’ve been raising every month to reach voters who are all too eager to rid our district of Tim Burchett, and right now we’re behind on our goal – we need to raise another $50k this month to stay on pace. TENNESSEE 👇👇👇👇EARLY VOTING: JULY 17 - AUGUST 1 ELECTION DAY: AUGUST 6 This is an all hands on deck situation. I don’t want to hear that voting doesn’t matter. I don’t want to hear that both sides are the same. Pick a candidate that gets you closest to the future you want, and then hold them accountable when they get in office! These are the local general elections, and the primaries for the state and federal elections on November 3rd! I don’t make the rules 🤷🏻‍♀️ If Tennessee Democrats TURNED OUT to the polls, we could sweep many of our local elections. Often, these elections are determined by a handful of votes. I have to admit that seeing my face printed this large is a little bizarre, but I love the design that Robin Easter Design put together for both of these featuring my last name and the call to action DEMOCRACY NEEDS OUR COURAGE. If you voted one way in the past and are starting to think you were sold a false bill of goods - democracy needs your courage. If you’ve never voted before because you didn’t think it mattered - democracy needs your courage.
