POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Introducing the first body of work that marks the start of a collaboration between two friends @karlien_vanrooyen and @michaelbeckurts who navigate the world through different lenses of ability.

By combining translucent ceramic “body-vessels” and narrative mark-making, we are exploring the somatic realities of our lives—the visible, the invisible, and the ways in which we care for one another. It is a shared dialogue on the nuances of navigating life differently, and the landscapes we have created for one another in between.

Tomorrow we will share a reel that explores our work in more detail and the process behind them.

I was approached by Irene Kyriacou of the Marble Group to create large scale drawings for the new Marble restaurant in the V&A Waterfront. My starting point was circling the harbour in a helicopter early one morning with my camera and sketchbook. I was fascinated by the majestic, cathedral-like shadows thrown by the ships and harbour cranes onto the water’s surface. Back in my studio I created 3 compositions on my iPad that combined unusual angles with multiple perspectives.

The interplay between architecture, machinery and nature creates scenes within scenes and stories within stories. In shades of blue, the drawings simultaneously evoke movement and calmness.

The restaurant opens to the public on 1 December.

Three artists. Three studios. One Saturday morning.

For Design Week, Joël , Driaan and Michael open their studios to a small group, and we’d like you to be in it.

Creative Spaces is a half-day Design Safari into the rooms where the work gets made. No gallery walls, no glass between you and the process: you stand next to the work, watch how it’s made and ask the artists anything.

10:15 · Joël Mamboka paints with fabric and colour: portraits in oil and textile about identity, resilience and fashion as resistance.

11:15 · Driaan Claassen sculpts deep, tall forms in bronze, wood, copper and ceramic in his Woodstock studio.

12:15 · Michael Beckurts paints Cape Town, everyday scenes and the people close to him in bright colour, and now carries that palette onto ceramics.

Saturday 24 October · 10:00 from our studio at 53 Church Street, in our Design Safaris Defender.

ZAR 450 per person, including transport, your hosts Micha and Tom, and a tote bag

Places are limited, and this is a one-morning-only edition for Design Week. To book, tap the link in bio or send us a DM.

I’ve painted and drawn my dear sister many times. These artworks become particularly special as they evoke priceless memories… and the anticipation of making many more - starting this weekend! 💃 🌅

I visited two dear friends and collectors of my work yesterday. Honoured to see a painting from my 2024 exhibition at the @avagallery.za hung in their beautiful home❤️

All the oils in this collection were painted from my memory of a particular place. This painting recreated the memory of a stay in the Cederberg the year before. I love how working from memory (with its many memory gaps) leads to unexpected colour combinations and an element of abstraction.

I’ve found some process shots… makes me itch to paint. Watch this space. by @michaelbeckurts

Last week recap!
1. Finally visited Robert Slingsby in his studio. Left absolutely buzzing (the turps?😜) and inspired to get back into oil painting. @robertslingsbyart 🙏
2. A little A5 drawing of the mountain. Nothing like a greasy pencil on a lovely piece of paper.
3. Fledgling Owls!! In my nearby Keurboom park.
4. Drawing of conductor Dr John Woodland. Just before his VOX choir performance started.
5. Drawing of my sister- fast asleep.
6. Testing out my new studio light! Pretty exciting upgrade as when set on certain colour frequencies- depth becomes ambiguous. by @michaelbeckurts

Spent yesterday morning in Michael Beckurts’ studio in Cape Town. His whole wall is covered in photographs of the city and its nature, and one single print that reminds him why he paints the way he does. He showed me the drawer where every painting actually starts, small sketches built up over years, long before any of it becomes something you’d hang on a wall. He’s also just started experimenting with ceramics, learning how differently colour behaves on that surface. We talked about art, design, life, and I genuinely did not want the morning to end.

This is what a Design Safari actually is. Not a checklist of sights, an introduction to the people who see Cape Town differently, one studio at a time. Four of Michael’s paintings are now on show in our aesplore studio in town, come see them in person.

Want a morning like this in Cape Town? Link in bio. And read more about @michaelbeckurts on our journal section on the website.

I’m sitting at my drawing table in my Rondebosch studio. Looking back on recent photos and drawings - precious memories made last month.

The Jean Miro and Van Gogh museums were incredibly moving- feeling so grateful to have seen their masterpieces in real life. Itching to get stuck into oils asap!!
