After losing more than 100 pounds, I found myself with over 100 men’s garments that I no longer needed. Rather than simply clean out my closet, I wanted to give back with intention.

I discovered the Syracuse Adult & Teen Challenge men’s shelter, a wonderful local program, and decided it was the perfect place to donate.

But the most meaningful part of the experience had nothing to do with the clothing.

As I knocked on the door, a man greeted me with five simple words:

“How can I help you, my beloved?”

And just like that, it felt as if the sun came out.

I explained why I was there, left the bins of clothing in the lobby, and went on my way. We never exchanged names. We didn’t need to.

It reminded me that giving back isn’t always about the size of the donation, the recognition, or even knowing who receives what you give. Sometimes, it’s about showing up, sharing what you have, and making someone’s day a little brighter.

And sometimes, the person who receives the greatest gift is you.

Give with intention. Serve with kindness and always remember to LOVE MORE. ❤️ #EmpathicLeadership #TisTheSeason by @michaeldsgro

My thoughts are the same as Tasha Yar from the TNG episode, Skin of Evil.❤️‍🩹

“Captain Jean-Luc Picard. I wish I could say you’ve been like a father to me, but I’ve never had one, so I don’t know what it feels like. But if there was someone in this universe I could choose to be like, someone who I would want to make proud of me, it’s you. You who have the heart of an explorer and the soul of a poet. So, you’ll understand when I say, death is that state in which one exists only in the memory of others. Which is why it is not an end. No goodbyes. Just good memories. Hailing frequencies closed, sir.” - Tasha Yar #StarTrek by @michaeldsgro

“Find a way to my heart
And I will always be with you
From wherever you are
I’ll be waiting
I’ll keep a place in my heart
You will see it shining through
So find a way to my heart
And I will, I will follow you”

These three incredible humans have held a special place in my heart since 1998. We shared a unique two-year journey that left a lasting impact on me. Through the values they modeled every day, they taught me lessons that have stayed with me throughout my life. Some people come into our lives and leave a lasting imprint on our hearts. These three certainly did.❤️ #EmpathicLeadership by @michaeldsgro

#Heyoka are the most powerful types of empaths that open people’s minds to new perspectives by acting as a mirror and poking satirical fun at the situation. Making light of serious circumstances allows people to see themselves in a different way and begin to heal rather than be stuck in a wallowing point of view.🌀💛✨ #EmpathicLeadership by @michaeldsgro
