Presenting my last ever CEDAR Inc (Coal Fair) project:

Titled, “COAL: The Heart of Appalachia” my sculpture represents the deep connection between coal and the people of Appalachia. The figure made of coal symbolizes the hardworking spirit of the region and the generations of miners who helped build and support Appalachian communities. The glowing light bulb represents energy, progress, and hope, showing how coal has powered homes, industries, and everyday life for decades. The exposed human heart inside the figure’s chest (made of various glass beads beaded together) symbolizes that coal is more than a resource in Appalachia, it is part of the region’s identity, culture, and history. Together, these elements show that coal has long been viewed as the “heart” of Appalachia, keeping communities alive and connected.

My piece won 1st place in the Future of Work in Appalachia (FWA) ART segment of the Cedar Fair (my fourth 1st title in a row in that category) as well and 1st in the Healthcare Careers Fair (HCF) Segment. It went on to place 3rd overall in the HCF and 1st overall in the FWA Fair, earning me the Student of the Year Distinction (my second time recovering that honor.)

I also had the privilege to share some insights on my art and reflect on my experience at the CEDAR Fair with Appalachian News Express.

Participating in the CEDAR Fair these past four years has been such an honor. I am grateful for the support, encouragement, and reception I have received with my various projects. Having the opportunity to raise awareness and shed light on various issues through my art has been so rewarding. As I end my journey and move on into this next chapter, I want to express my gratitude with CEDAR Inc and all the people who helped me succeed in showcasing my art. Thank you for everything you did, it’s been such an amazing experience. by @michaelhagyart

This is a sculpture titled, “Mountain Resilience”. It competed at the 2025 CEDAR Inc. Fair, winning first place in the art category and second place overall. It was created to honor the strength and unity of our Appalachian region in the face of natural disasters, drawing inspiration from the recent flooding. It was made using items recovered from my home after the flood. The sticks represent growth and the mud represents the emptiness that many in our community have felt. by @michaelhagyart
