It’s officially official.

I can now say that I will be performing The Rock Boat’s 25th anniversary sailing Jan. 29th-February 5th. To say I’m honored is an understatement.

More information and details to follow but man, I’m fired up. Thankful to Ken Block & Trae Vedder for the opportunity & the kinds words during today’s announcement🙏🏼🤘🏼

While out on a walk this week I ruptured BOTH of my quad tendons during a freak accidental fall. (To make matters worse, it’s not even a cool story 🙄😅 Full explanation in video)

***At the end of this video I sing a relevant lyric from a legendary artist/writer. Comment with your favorite song lyric from that artist so I know ya tried watched it all 😝
It helps the algo and honestly, I’m gonna need the distraction. And, if you somehow DON’T know what song/artist the lyric I sing is from, it’s about time you did 😉***

Apparently, rupturing both at once is about as rare as it sounds, and it’s honestly been one of the biggest physical and mental challenges I’ve ever faced. It’s the same type of injury that ended Charles Barkley’s career, so I guess my days of elite rebounding and posterized slam dunks are over 🤣

Surgery sometime next week and I face a 4-6 month recovery process.

One minute life’s moving at full speed, gigs are popping, new songs are releasing—the next I’m learning how to navigate without full use of either leg. I do get around a little better than expected but it’s only temporary.

I’m a pretty sturdy, athletic guy, so if it can happen to me, it can happen to anyone. Y’all be careful out there and I’ll keep ya posted as much as I can. Don’t forget to comment those song lyrics 😉

Heartbreaking news last night to learn of the sudden passing of one of the coolest cats I ever got to know—Rusty Davis.

Please spare a moment for his lovely wife Jean and the entire Davis family, especially my dear friends Patrick and Megan, who carry Rusty’s love of music and talent with them in every room they enter. They made sure Rusty got to live out some of his wildest rock ‘n roll dreams and I was fortunate to be there for a few of them over the years. His only album, recorded as a young man in Nashville, is also on all the streaming services. Go look it up if you can. It’s pretty dang good. He ultimately settled into a quiet life as a schoolteacher in Camden, South Carolina but he NEVER retired the guitar, even continuing those teaching skills at Davis & Sons Guitar Shop and gigging around as much as he could.
Rusty could honestly run circles around some of the best players in Nashville and beyond. It was a treat watching him do so when Patrick would bring him along. He was loved and admired by them all for his chops. That unassuming “Ben Franklin-lookin’ dude” could rip!

And man, he loved Eric Clapton. This video is from around 12:30am on April 22nd, 2023. We’re on the front porch of the Harvest Inn in St Helena, CA for Songwriters in Paradise. Full of fine wine and nowhere near ready for the night to end. Rusty asked me what I wanted to play and it was unforgettable the way his eyes glowed when I didn’t say but just started Clapton’s “Running On Faith.”

This was Rusty. Always ready and wanting to play, no matter the time or place. I’m honored I had the privilege to strum along to our favorites tunes every once in a while and that I got to be his chauffeur from time to time on these crazy fun trips. As with anything like this, I just wish I had been able to do it more.

Starting to have a little “fun” at physical therapy, ha.

If you’re just catching up: I’m now 10-weeks post-op from bilateral quad surgery after a freak fall in Nashville late July. Almost every trip to therapy brings out the same reaction from another patient just starting their journey: “Geez! Both of ‘em?!”
My response: “Yes, I tore both quad tendons at the same time. Overachiever here!” Then we get to work.

Big love for the team @performancetherapyinst for continuing to put me through the paces and get me back on the road again soon. Still facing at least another two months of steady rehab but these last two and a half months have flown by already and there’s a faint light starting to shimmer at the end of the tunnel. I was told likely spring before any consideration for jogging, etc but I’ll take all the little wins as they come.

Oct 2, 2017 we lost one of the all-time greats in Tom Petty, WAY too soon.

You don’t need me to tell you his legacy but this deep-cut song, “Angel Dream No. 2” is beautiful and one of my absolute favorites.

It’s from the She’s The One soundtrack, a film written and directed by Ed Burns. Petty was in the middle of writing and recording his opus that would become the Wildflowers album when Burns approached him to gain the rights to one of Petty’s songs for the film.
Petty was in such a prolific period (one that would haunt him emotionally not much later) and told Burns—instead of using one of his old songs—he’d just write him a full soundtrack. The She’s The One soundtrack—which became the official 9th studio album for Petty—is a true gem of originals that also includes covers of Lucinda Williams and Beck(!)

If you somehow have never dug in, you now have a homework assignment 😉Thank me later.

Just noodling around on a Monday, killing time before my next physical therapy appointment.

Thanks again to all who have shared and contributed to the GoFundMe set up last week. If you’re just catching up, I was suddenly laid off from the merch job I had, less than a third of the way (4-6 months) through my recovery from bilateral quad surgery. It was helping pay my living expenses and medical costs but no more.

Continue to be humbled by the generosity of y’all. It ain’t easy asking for help with mounting bills & sudden income loss when you can’t physically work/drive and do most of the things you’re used to doing. (Who tears BOTH quads at the same time?! )*heavy sigh* I digress...

Still a ways to go for me on this recovery train. I’m just over two months of an estimated 4-6 month recovery and the reality is I will still be fighting for full functionality (running, jumping, etc) well into the new year. PT is going great and I’m mostly hitting my knee flexion marks for this stage of recovery but still a ways to go.

Please watch and consider. I appreciate each of you that take the time to watch the whole thing and spread the word.

I tear both quad tendons, unable to play live gigs, and just lost the merch job that was helping pay the big bills. Can’t even drive to side hustle.
