@designetal are delighted to reveal the winners of The International Design & Architecture Awards 2026.

The winners were revealed at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London, on Friday 11 September 2026. This year was another huge year for the Awards. A massive 117,793 votes were counted and verified, over 76,500 hours of engagement over all shortlisted projects.

At Leaf House, the landscape does not end at the front door.

Designed by Alex Michaelis as a zero-carbon home for his family, the house sits within the secluded landscape of Adlestrop, in a former limestone quarry in the Cotswolds.

The project brings sustainable architecture and biophilic design into everyday family life. Warm timber and clay plaster introduce texture and softness, while curved walls guide movement from one space to the next. The same organic geometry continues through built-in seating, dining areas and bathrooms, connecting the interiors to the leaf-like forms of the architecture.

Carefully positioned openings frame the surrounding planting and draw daylight deep into the plan. This environmental design approach allows the stone, light and changing seasons to remain a constant presence within the home.

How do we make older buildings perform better without stopping them from breathing?

Our Director Sara travelled to Tŷ-Mawr in the Brecon Beacons for a course in sustainable retrofit, joining architects, contractors and homeowners to explore the materials and methods behind healthier, more resilient buildings.

The day focused on breathable building products that improve insulation while helping homes respond to cold winters and increasingly warm summers.

What should a new building inherit from the one that stood before it?

At Leaf House, the Long Barn occupies the footprint of a former agricultural building, extending the home into the landscape while preserving the memory of the site.

Its simple gabled form is clad in Douglas fir, which will silver naturally as the seasons pass. Circular openings and generous glazing frame the surrounding planting, keeping spaces for work, guests and leisure in constant conversation with the landscape.

The roof generates renewable energy, contributing to Leaf House’s entirely off-grid system. It is a practical part of the architecture rather than an addition concealed behind it.

The Long Barn has its own identity, but follows the same rule as the wider project: work with the stone, light and seasons already present and the way it will continue to change with time.

How do three buildings of different ages begin to read as one place?

Phase one of our Wiltshire project is nearing completion, bringing together a flint and thatch pool house, a new ash-clad cottage and a renovated Victorian gardener’s cottage.

Each building has its own character, but a shared material language connects the architecture to the surrounding landscape and to the history already present on site.

How do you capture the ease of Parisian living without relying on nostalgia?

At Le Grand Hôtel Cayré, the bedrooms take their cues from Saint-Germain itself. Warm timber, pale walls and layered fabrics soften the rooms, while generous windows allow natural light to shape their atmosphere throughout the day.

Throughout, the design draws on the character of the Left Bank without feeling overly traditional. Curved headboards, crafted joinery, muted tones and small decorative details bring a sense of softness to the spaces, while generous windows and a restrained palette allow the light to become part of the design.

‘The Eden Project: Bring Me Sunshine Garden’ debuted at RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2026, and was designed as a place to gather, learn and connect. The pavilion was conceived as more than a place of shelter. Designed as a setting for gathering and learning, it sits within a landscape shaped by materials and ecology.

Working closely with The Eden Project and Harry Holding Studio, the garden brings together architecture, planting and water in a way that reflects the landscape and character of Morecambe Bay. Reclaimed stone, rainwater harvesting and a solar-harvesting roof all form part of a wider approach focused on regeneration and long-term use.

Following the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, the garden has been relocated to Eden Project Morecambe, where it is becoming part of a permanent community space for learning, gathering and future generations.
