Beauty intertwined with pain. Tribal marks and scarification have long served as symbols of beauty, identity, and spiritual protection in many African cultures. This project explores the ancient lost-wax casting technique, which has become extinct, alongside the evolution of beauty throughout history, from the Venus of Willendorf in the Old Stone Age to the light golden tan skin of women with soft, rounded bodies in Ancient Egypt. Scarification is a form of body modification that involves creating design or patterns on the face or body by cutting or branding. The tribal marks discussed were inspired by the Yoruba tribe of Nigeria, where they were traditionally used as expressions of beauty and identity, but in contemporary times have unfortunately been criminalised. Immortalising African beauty through materiality and form.
