Music history just came full circle.

@Apple has announced Apple Music Hall, a new live music venue inside London’s Battersea Power Station.

Nearly 50 years ago, that same building became one of the most recognizable images in album-cover history through Pink Floyd’s Animals.

Now it begins another chapter as a place where music will be performed, recorded and shared.

Animals is one of the 11 album covers I selected for the Muse by Clio series, highlighting great album covers that have become part of the cultural landscape.

TOM TOM CLUB @tomtomclubofficial

The cover of Tom Tom Club and the animated “Genius of Love” video feel like two parts of the same wonderfully strange world.

Artist James Rizzi developed his layered 3-D style because he had painting, printmaking and sculpture assignments due at the same time. His solution was to make an etching, print it twice and use wire to create depth.

It earned him good grades, became his signature technique and eventually helped define the visual identity of an album that still feels completely alive. The album was recorded at Compass Point, which, at the time, was a hotspot for rising global talent – a picturesque, Bahamian retreat that set creative juices afire. The sun soaked studio was the perfect catalyst for Tom Tom Club’s jubilant, playful, funk oddities, which drew from a broad palette of dazzling tones. In addition to Genius of Love, another song the group recorded was ‘Wordy Rappinghood’, one of the album’s major hits, which blended emerging rap, new wave, and funk, in a quirky style.

THE MAMAS & THE PAPAS
If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears

For more than 12 years, photographer and art director Guy Webster was my neighbor in Venice Beach. He had photographed everyone from Jim Morrison and the Stones to the Byrds and the Beach Boys, but this story always made me laugh.

Unable to leave the house because they were too buzzed, The Mamas & the Papas ended up posing in the bathroom. No one anticipated that putting a toilet on an album cover would be considered “indecent.”

The record was pulled from stores and returned with a sticker promoting “California Dreamin’.” The controversy only attracted more attention, the song went to No. 1 and Webster never stopped working.

Sometimes the story behind an iconic image is as memorable as the image itself.

The @BeastieBoys Paul’s Boutique is one of the most heavily sampled albums ever made, constructed from more than 100 beats @ pieces of funk, soul, rock, jazz and hip-hop. I can still remember the smell of the record when I opened it.

The panoramic photograph of Ludlow Street at Rivington captures the same dense collision of ideas as the music. Designed by Nathaniel Hornblower and Jeremy Shatan, the fold-out sleeve feels like a visual version of the Dust Brothers’ production: gritty, layered and endlessly worth exploring.

An album cover you could get lost in, for a record you could never fully unravel.
