It’s been along time since I engaged with social media but this occasion must be shared. Here is a photo of Archie Moore’s work in the Australian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, kith and kin, a beautiful installation with presence and power. Archie and curator Ellie Buttrose have delivered a work that is cogent and compelling because it somehow encapsulates the very personal and the universal with straightforward simplicity. There are four essential elements: the black cube of the gallery, the family tree written in white chalk on the walls, with tens of thousands of names both known and unknown, a damning plinth in white in the middle with paper-like stacks representing the reports into how ‘Aboriginal issues’ might be dealt with, and finally the white plinth is surrounded by a moat of dark liquid representing those who have died. And then —. I have just heard that this morning Archie has won the Golden Lion for the best national work in the Biennale!!! Fantastic!!! by @michaeljsnelling

On Saturday 29 March, 1980 I arrived in Adelaide to teach at the South Australian School of Art. I was picked up at the airport by one of the few people I knew there and whisked off to a party in the parklands, here in the photo, where everyone was celebrating this beautiful mud hut, named Dwelling, made by Hossein Valamanesh. It was utterly at home, yet unfamiliar, a strange presence in a eucalyptus and melaleuca setting. It wasn’t bombastic or over-confident, yet it had presence and authority. That wonderfully bracing clarity of ideas and materials which Hossein continued to develop and show us, often in collaboration with Angela, over the following forty or so years. Now Hossein has unexpectedly, abruptly, left us, to dwell elsewhere. We’ve all lost a wonderful, generous and warm person and terrific artist. Vale Hossein Valamanesh. by @michaeljsnelling

Suhanya receiving her Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres from the French Consul General yesterday. The Consul spoke of the high esteem in which her French colleagues hold her. A wonderful acknowledgment of a stellar career in full flight. by @michaeljsnelling

Vale Chris Winter. A legend. A friend. Although years would pass and we wouldn’t have any contact it was easy to pick up where we had left off. We last spoke a couple of months ago. The voice and one of the shapers of Double J and then triple j and before that Room to Move. Australian music, unknown bands and the ethos of unearthing that triple j still embodies started with Chris and a handful of others. Then he moved into digital media at the ABC in the two thousands and was equally influential. On April 1 the wonderful Annabelle Collett, designer, artist, curator died. Because she knew this was coming she threw a Leaving the World party a few weeks earlier. I was going to have lunch with her at her home just outside Adelaide but our timing was off and I missed her by a few days. At least we got to talk. She painted a swimming pool on my desk at the Experimental Art Foundation because I love swimming. The desk came with me to the Institute of Modern Art in Brisbane.
