Social media is an interesting place because when a creator has a following, it can mean a lot of different things.

It could mean that they are an expert in their field, or it could also mean that they just understand the game that is social media.

I hope that my videos have been helpful to people, and I am very grateful for the audience I have been fortunate to build. That being said, I think a lot of people see that I or other creators with large followings have some elevated level of expertise and that is often not the case.

Now I know that this sounds like “the pot calling the kettle black” but I think there are some important things to consider when watching video in the audio/production space, and it informs how I approach making my videos.

I don’t ever post any videos about actually mixing. No mixing tips or tricks, no “use these settings to achieve this sounds” but I still get messages all the time from people asking me to teach them how to make their mix sound better. Less than .0006% of my followers have ever heard me mix. I’m happy to share what I can, but I caution people to put blind trust in people just because they have a following

There are very few things in which there is only one right way. Most things are subjective or have multiple ways to achieve the same outcome. I make videos to show what is possible, and to show my way of doing it. That doesn’t mean it’s the right way.
Be careful of people who tell you that “this is the right way to do it”

Also, context is always important. I’ve seen so many videos of people saying “this is how to achieve… sound, etc. Those videos are often useful, but consider the context and don’t expect to have the same results when your context differs. by @michaelleckrone

How would you explain being an audio engineer to a group of 4th graders? by @michaelleckrone

Lily P4Ds are super useful!

It’s very common in live sound to use some kind of device to mute or gate the mic for when it’s not in use. These scenarios are usually when it may be used irregularly, or used off and on when chasing console mutes is not practical.

I used optogates for a long time which worked but always had their quirks. Since switching to the Lily P4D I have 0 regrets

How does understanding the Fletcher Munson Curves affect your approach to mixing, and how does it differ from the studio too environment? by @michaelleckrone

ProdCom is a very useful tool that has become part of my (and many people’s) workflow.

It will take in any audio protocol and transcribe whatever is being said. Very useful for when lots of talkbacks or com is being used at the same time, it helps decipher what’s being said so you don’t miss anything.

The sharing feature allows others it the iPhone or iPad app receive those same transcriptions via the network, without having to receive any actual audio.

ProdCom can then go further and send OSC or MIDI messages based off of keywords that can be used to trigger macros and such (more videos on that soon) by @michaelleckrone

I guess lighting is cool too…

So I am an audio guy through and through and know very little about lighting. Every time I think about learning MA I realize that there is so much more audio to learn so I don’t bother.
But my understanding is that the really is no limit to what you can make this console do (even though this was pretty basic)

Soon we will be exploring some OSC between his MA3 and my DiGiCo try ti build some fun things.

Software I have recently added to my touring workflow.
In the last year or so I have added several new things to my workflow. These work well for me, but maybe not for everyone. But if you have been curious about any of these, feel free to ask me any questions. by @michaelleckrone
