Speech & Debate has truly been the anchor in my life for the past couple of years. Never in a million years did I think I would argue for fun, AND enjoy it. Being pushed to do this activity by my parents is the best thing that ever happened to me.

For the past 4 years I have learned, practiced, had team events, done thanksgiving dinner, had Christmas, gone to sports games, etc. with the Rockhurst High School Speech & Debate Team. Hanging out with these boys has given me the best group of friends I could ever ask for.

As a freshman, I didn’t enjoy debate because I wasn’t good at it…and as a Sophmore I had minimal success other than Parli with my partner Mason (Who I will do policy with at KU next year 😂). Junior year was when my career truly took off, and the skill and polish truly began to get me the results I wanted. Being a part of this team has been the most unbelievable lesson of never, not ever giving up…because I went from lost and confused, to competitive, to a MSHSAA State Champion in PFD.

There were many times where I realized the privilege I had to be on such a fantastic team, and at times I wasn’t sure if I would be around anymore…but I am so happy I was given the chance to continue competing for this team and my coaches, as well as myself. Debate has been truly a great mold for how I live, extending to the way I carry myself, write, and think.

Thank you to my parents, all of the partners I have had over the years, especially Lane Christopher who is the best partner I could have ever asked for…my fellow teammates, Coach DeHardt, and most importantly Coach Helt. No person in my life has been more pivotal than you, and I am so thankful for what you have done for me both inside and outside of a debate environment.

I sure will miss the Show-Me district, and I really am thankful to have had such a great experience with the community and friends I have made along the way.
