Update on the takeover of my dormant 310 and 702 numbers:

I’ve kicked the hackers out of the very few things they were able to access from a limited, but very aggressive breach two weeks ago (see prior post for details). They never had control of my current phone number, email or social networks.

Since they didn’t get anything worth holding over my head, they resorted to threats of physical violence. So far, I don’t find the threats to be overly credible (albeit higher than zero), nor is there a lot of precedent for digital attackers turning physical (basically they’re saying they’ll hire people to hurt me and my family if I don’t pay them $500k extortion, a reduction from their first demand of $1 mm).

I let them know I have no intention of paying them anything for extortion, and have tightened up my physical privacy and personal security, after six days of bulletproofing the cyber side. I’ve engaged with the FBI, Homeland Security, SDNY and others, and am pretty convinced this new hacker is tied to one of the original hackers, who apparently had a standing order to buy these compromised numbers if they ever appeared on the open market.

Their rhetoric softened a bit on Friday, so I didn’t respond at all. They haven’t contacted me since early Saturday and all of their cyber activity (password reset attempts, mainly) have stopped as well.

In summary, I’m safe and have not lost one penny or anything else of significant value, other than some peace of mind. Back to work… by @michaelterpin

Please be aware that two of my former numbers (my 310 and 702 numbers) are now owned by hackers due to a third party’s negligence.

They obtained mainly historic personal and PR company information and started threatening me and asking for money on Friday morning.

I gave this info to the San Juan FBI, even though I have no idea where this hacker lives. He told me he is good friends with one of my 2018 hackers now in federal prison, so I wouldn’t doubt that one of those original hackers had a standing order to buy my number if it ever became available.

Two asks:

1) If anyone claiming to me approaches you via text, Facebook, Telegram, WhatsApp or other means, screen capture it and don’t engage. I presume the next phase of their campaign is to try and scam or hack my friends. Don’t click on links, join any groups or download anything from them, even a picture. Please report to me and to the platform.

2) If any of you have resources in cybercrime law enforcement who want to bring down what appears to be a corporate ransomware hacker (he kept asking me about if I had cyber insurance), I’d like to broaden the net to stop this guy.

Pass this along to people who know me. One of the continuing downsides of my famous 2018 sim swap (and this wasn’t a sim swap, it was a negligent present to dangerous hackers, an unforced error) is that I’m likely a trophy hack if someone can get me again.

Puerto Rico friends, please help Joyce Chow and I celebrate the beginning of summer (yes, I know it’s sometimes hard to tell) at our rooftop penthouse.

Joyce is serving her favorite dishes: pernil (Puerto Rico pork shoulder), paella, and fresh Atlantic salmon. We will have wine and some cocktails, and it should be great pool/jacuzzi weather.
