Big Saturday for these cousins 🤩

As a lifelong strength coach, I often get credit for my kids’ athletic development. But there’s a lot more to the story.

In our family, iron sharpens iron.

My little sister, Bree, lettered in three high school sports. My older brother, Chris, is probably the best athlete of the three of us. We grew up competing together, and our kids have grown up doing the same.

Ultimately finding their niche in: Muay Thai, gymnastics, diving, basketball, rugby, volleyball, football, tennis, our family has always loved to compete and play hard together.

The cousins challenge each other, support each other, build each other up, and beat each other down. They push one another to get better and show up to celebrate each other’s wins.

As parents, we’ve had the privilege of guiding them and creating opportunities. But they’re the ones putting in the work.

Their strength, their growth, and ultimately their success belong to them. They’ve earned it.

The flu has me running on fumes, and honestly, I’m not entirely sure what I’m saying. 😂

But I got a lot done today, and I wanted to show up here, too. No perfect message. No polished delivery. Just me, doing what I can with what I’ve got.

Now it’s time to rest. Even Coach needs a timeout. 🤒 taken in Encinitas, California by @michaelthetrainer

Our second speaker from last week was our very own Coach Michael Cummings (MC). He spoke on how each person had their own journey and how they navigate it can differ from person to person. That each individual has their own path, and that only they themselves can be in control of your own destiny. taken in The Togethership by @michaelthetrainer

Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl during the Texas State Fair lived up to the hype. Even though my team didn’t win it was such a fun life moment!

Grateful to have a mom who can rally with her two adult sons ❤️

My daughter Snoop plays volleyball at Grand Canyon University.

She’s 5’3”.

In a sport where height can be a serious advantage, she learned a long time ago that she had better find other ways to separate herself.

For Snoop, that’s footwork, movement, athleticism, passion and intensity.

She moves like she’s AI. She reacts quickly. She competes. And she brings an intensity that doesn’t show up on a height chart.

As a strength and conditioning coach and as a dad who has watched two kids navigate the path to Division I athletics this continues to reinforce something I believe deeply:

Sport-specific skills matter. But athleticism creates opportunity.

Teach a young athlete how to run, jump, land, decelerate, change direction, react, balance and control their body and you’re giving them tools that transfer to almost every sport.

You can teach a volleyball player a better serve.
You can teach a basketball player a better shot.
You can teach a football player better technique.

But developing a truly athletic human being takes years of intentional movement, exposure and repetition.

Parents sometimes invest thousands of dollars into club teams, private lessons, tournaments and showcases while overlooking one of the most valuable investments they can make:

Athletic development.

Build the athlete alongside the sport-specific player.

Because when an athlete moves differently, competes relentlessly and brings something to the game that’s difficult to teach, good coaches tend to find a place for them on the court, on the field, or wherever their sport takes them.

Snoop once said to me, “Dad, even though I’m shorter than everybody else, I always look at them eye-to-eye. I’ve never felt shorter.” Snoop is a pretty good reminder:

You don’t always get to choose your physical gifts. But you can absolutely develop what you do with them.

And starting young is a priceless investment in your child’s future. taken in Arizona, USA by @michaelthetrainer

The best athletes aren’t just playing more. They’re developing better. 💪

@togethership_performance , our after-school programs and camps give young athletes a place to move, learn, compete, build confidence and become better athletes—regardless of the sport they play.

🏀 Basketball
🏐 Volleyball
🏈 Football
🥍 Lacrosse
🏊 Swimming
⚽ Soccer
…and so much more.

We focus on the athletic qualities that transfer to EVERY sport: strength, speed, agility, balance, coordination, mobility, reaction and confidence.

For parents, it’s an opportunity to give your child a positive, structured environment after school where they can grow physically and mentally.

For coaches, bring us your team. Let us handle the athletic development so you can spend more of your valuable practice time coaching your sport.

Young athletes only get one developmental window. What we build now becomes the foundation they compete with later.

Better movers become better athletes.
Better athletes become more confident competitors.

Bring your kid. Bring your team. Come train with us. taken in San Clemente, California by @michaelthetrainer
