from my friend, Dan Sorrells.

Pleased to finally share a piece on freejazzblog.org about my friend M P Landis (and maestro Michael Sarin!) and the intersection of his painting and improvised music. M P pours his whole life into his abstract art, but he’s one of the least pretentious people I know. It was also a pleasure to delve deep into “the archives” and attempt the impossible task of curating some paintings that give even a small idea of the breadth and diversity of his work.

Without wishing to give more airtime to a topic we’re bludgeoned with daily, I’ll simply say that the kind of art M P creates and the sorts of artists with whom he engages are the utter antithesis of the numbing, smoothed-over world the AI boosters would have for us. Art can’t be distilled into a bunch of matrix multiplication because it is inextricable from embodied creativity and actual lived experience. In our dismal milieu, move toward the beacons like M P. Keep it real, keep it weird.

the beginning of deconstructing the 3 paintings made with Michael Sarin during the 5th outing of Paint & Drums, tape is off, next comes tearing the paper down into 12 x 12” works. (final photos are before the tape was removed)
