How Bittersweet manic nature a multi-disciplinary COUTURE and ART Project (Launch January 2023) A visual and emotional journey of my own bi-polar vulnerability, to break stigma around bipolar vulnerability make connection and open up dialogue developed into BI-POPULAIR (Wearable activism!) printed on T-Shirts, Sweaters and Hoodies launched during my presentation of Bittersweet manic nature at Parnassia Groep for the Jaarlijkse Ervaringsdeskundige dag 30 November 2023 Museum Corpus Leiden. On invitation by Lynn Ledder 4th. of Sept 2023. BI-POPULAIR developed into the BI-POPULAIR COMMUNITY with Events where like-minded people can meet in a safe space and share their experiences, share knowledge, help eachother, be inspired, follow workshops, listen to music, stories… Like-minded people who share the same vulnerability or their supporters that have the same mission breaking stigma, connect and open up… or are part of healing. ,,You are not alone… you can fight it persevere and have a wonderful life’’ ❤️ Michael van der Meide What is BI-POPULAIR? It’s BI-POLAIR and POPULAIR in one word. We use the word already for years my partner Ivan, my Mother and me. ,,I think I am getting BI-POPULAIR again’’. ,,Are you BI-POPULAIR again?’’ ,,Yes, I’m BI-POPULAIR.’’ using it with humor inspired on one of my hypomanic states where I believe I am immensely populair and even believing I am a fabulous famous manic Rockstar. BI-POPULAIR COMMUNITY Organisation led by @natalie_spaans at Plusminus Team: Marijke Rommelse, Idan Spund, Hazel Kloos, Tomás de Paauw (Stigma, Identity and Spoken word), Nienke de Bruijn (Presentation Talk, Congres) Ellen Bakker-Denissen, Jonna Knoppert, Dieuwke Voets (Warm hosts) Lily Lamei-Baas (Spoken word), Lenneke Stegeman (Mindfulness and Spirituality workshop), Laila de Vries (Singer/Songwriter Performance), Ore Hoogendijk (Talk & Mental health in work environment Workshop), Diana van Houten (Bipolar & Parenting Stand), Nienke de Bruijn (Auteur Tussen hoogtes en dieptes Stand), KenBis (Research Stand), Michael van der Meide (BI-POPULAIR Stand)💛🧡❤️🩷💚 📸 Francesca Von Cigno (First two!) #empowerment #mentalhealth #bipolar #bipopulair #nostigma by @michaelvandermeide
MARCEL VEENENDAAL rocking a wardrobe of several Performance Couture Looks in de Kuip. 🔥DI-RECT in de KUIP🔥 DEVIL DON’T CARE On the 11th. of November 2019 I saw Marcel Veenendaal with DI-RECT promoting their Song Devil don’t care at De Wereld draait door. Jamel Armand and Chantel Koo did the Art direction for that captivating video. It’s about Mingus a young guy that likes to wear dresses and make-up so he’s experimenting with his sexuality. Which immediately struck a cord with my own identity! Being kind of fluid myself. Also Bo van Spilbeeck the Belgian transgender journalist was at the table and the talk with Marcel was about selfacceptance and the bumpy road towards it. Now what Marcel said really touched me because he said besides a brand or anything you would wear yellow which Bo was wearing being the beautiful person she now is… the bumpy road of selfacceptance and then the fucking world against you. Also the way Marcel dressed intuitively felt right with what I was creating at the time. At that moment I decided to send an email straight away to contact Marcel and his management. I got his number and within a few weeks Marcel came to my shop in the @fenix in Katendrecht. We clicked and this is where our professional journey began! This performance couture a dramatic floorlong Monk Coat with many high slits lined in EYES art print and dramatic blouse and wide pleated pants both in EYES art print and big topstitched round collar is designed and created specially for Marcel performing Devil don’t care with a massive winged mindblowing EYES printed Art parachutecape. A full circle moment!💚🖤💚 Some things in life feel surreal! This was one of them! Day 1 yesterday in my hometown of Rotterdam @de.kuip @directband rocked their first concert of three. And we did the costume designs what a dream❣️ Thank you’s to @directband @agentsafterall @mrbeam_studio and everyone who made this possible @jamelarmand for the art EYE prints Zoltan for helping with production and ofcourse @veenendaalmarcel for rocking our designs and giving the chance❣️ So grateful will never forget this moment❣️🙏🏼❤️ You are all amazing! Wonderful video by @setvexy and amazing team 📸🎥 by @michaelvandermeide

I found these old fashion sketches… I think they are late 90’s… I should draw again! Because I usually work with a material directly on the body or mannequin. I don’t start my designs from a sketch but through a process with trial and error and the characteristics of textiles. It’s very intuitive… I like to mould the material like a sculptor with a poetic edge. Love Michael by @michaelvandermeide
