A favorite from a few years back for #internationalportraitday โ€ฆ

In โ€œBarking Up The Wrong Tree,โ€ two young men of Afro-Caribbean decent, โ€œBโ€ and โ€œSFโ€, take a moment to compose themselves under an oak tree canopy at a neighborhood park.

The friends stand closely together and assert their identity, place, and belonging with pride. B flashes an inviting grin, paired with a hand sign that leads the viewersโ€™ eyes through the composition to meet SF, perched atop a tree stump, โ€”or perhaps, propped up on a pedestal, confronting the viewer with intensity and confidence. Interwoven into his cocoon like pose, SFโ€™s Santeria beads, or elekes, signal that the guidance and protection of higher powers is at work here. With deep roots in the West African Yoruba religion, coupled with elements of Roman Catholicism, Santeria, the Afro-Caribbean born religion, epitomizes the convergence of races, cultures, and religions.

โ€œBarking Up The Wrong Treeโ€ further explores the long standing theme of community found in my work. Within the context of current times where conversations about identity, โ€” color, race, religious beliefsโ€” and a slew of other societal issues have all been amplified, B and SF find empowerment through their shared beliefs, unity, and brotherhood. And although the painting is not aggressive in nature, there is an underlying tone that anyone testing these notions, would surely be barking up the wrong tree.

Shattered Glass, the acclaimed exhibition of new art by emerging artists of color that was shown at Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles last spring, will be presented in an expanded version in the Moore Building in the Miami Design District from November 29 โ€“ December 5, 2021.โฃ
โฃ
The Los Angeles version of Shattered Glass, curated by Melahn Frierson and A.J. Girard, was more than an exhibition, it was a phenomenon, attracting 1,000 visitors per day in its final weeks. Shattered Glass connected with a diverse art audience, giving visitors a rare opportunity to see art that reflected their own life experience. Frierson and Girard selected emerging artists from Los Angeles, Miami, Baltimore, Dallas, New Jersey and less likely cities like Fresno. Many of the artists knew each other prior to the exhibition. The show represented communities in addition to individual talents. The expanded Miami version of Shattered Glass will include fifteen new artists.โฃ

The sandcastle takes the form of William B. Harvard Sr.โ€™s iconic inverted pyramid pier, which stood from 1973 to 2015, and continues to hold a lasting place in the cityโ€™s collective memory. In the background, the current iteration of the Pier rises on the horizon, drawing past and present into quiet dialogue through the lens of imagination and familial connection.โฃ
โฃ
While celebrating the Pierโ€™s architectural history and the cultural spirit of The Sunshine City, ๐˜š๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ๐˜ค๐˜ข๐˜ด๐˜ต๐˜ญ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ โ€“ ๐˜š๐˜ฑ๐˜ข ๐˜‰๐˜ฆ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜ฉ also continues a deeply personal thread in my artistic practice: the reimagining of fatherhood. Growing up without a father figure, I often explore intergenerational relationships and the longing for paternal connection. This mural revisits and expands upon those themes, directly recalling my 2015 ๐—ฆ๐—›๐—œ๐—ก๐—˜ mural ๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ ๐˜ธ๐˜ช๐˜ต๐˜ฉ ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ๐˜ณ, which likewise featured Harvardโ€™s inverted pyramid and reflected a similar yearning for relationship, presence, and belonging. Here, a fleeting sculpture takes on monumental weightโ€”hands shaping a form that could never stand aloneโ€”reminding us that even the most impermanent gestures can become anchors of memory, meaning, and place. Blending personal reflection with collective nostalgia, the mural invites viewers to see the Pier not only as an architectural landmark, but as a living site of shared experienceโ€”rebuilt again and again through stories, relationships, and the imagination.โฃ
