Thank you @cnn @cnnpolitics @briannakeilar @kidsmentalhealthfoundation for raising awareness around the important issues military-connected children face when going back to school after a PCS (change of duty station). Transitioning back to school can be challenging for all children, but military-connected children face immensely greater obstacles in these transitions, being met with complete unfamiliarity in a new home, neighborhood, community, school, sports teams or social activities, medical providers, and all without the emotional support of friends & extended family. Loneliness, isolation, loss of identity, anxiety, and a feeling a loss of belonging are common emotions that military-connected children face, becoming increased risk factors for mental health issues as a result of managing these large transitions. @bluestarfamilies has organized a nationwide effort, “Blue Star Welcome Week”, which recognizes the 600,000 military families who move into new communities each year. The goal of this special week, celebrated from September 26th, 2026- October 4th, 2026, is to improve their sense of belonging in the communities where they live and serve. Together, we can help them create strong connections with their local neighbors. To all of our military-connected children, thank you for your bravery and sacrificing courageously for our country.
