⠀ 4 planes, a boat, many automobiles, 4 daysI’ve finally reached La Gonave, Haiti to continue working on the feature documentary @10_oclock_flowersIn the film, Tibebe, a courageous Haitian artist and activist chases her dreams, once smudged out by a life of servitude called restavek in Haiti. Reckoning with her hard won freedom, she undulates between her poetic inner world, grassroots organizing and community theatre work in rural Haiti.Here’s a look back at the previous shoots in Haiti. This piece is portrait of a Haitian family picking up the pieces after losing their home and the family’s baby following the August 14th earthquake. Measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, these latest tremors were stronger than the 7.0 magnitude earthquake that hit the capital, Port-au-Prince in 2010 claiming an estimated 300,000 lives. The epicenter landed in a more rural area this time, making the loss of life statistically less, yet no less tragic. Entire towns were flattened, at least 2,248 lives were lost and over 130,000 people left homeless. This is just one story, told graciously by 24-year-old Melienne and her 8-year-old daughter Cynthia. As a child I was whipped and I was raped. I was hung. I went without food. We’re seeking justice and reparations.” That is the best way I can introduce the teaser for this project - with the revolting words of adults who lived as restaveks during their childhood in Haiti. Restavek is a Kreyol word rooted in the French phrase “Rester avec” which means literally to “stay with”. It is a complex residue of slavery where children are sent to live with a family member, a stranger, or trafficked with the promise for a better life, yet wind up getting abused.Thank you @squarezerofilms for asking me to start shooting this project three years ago. Anyone who knows me, knows I’ve been writing, talking about and photographing this subject long before. Here is yet another chorus of voices with haunting testimonies about this vestige best left in the past. I hope we can finish this film to amplify their work in the fight for freedom.
