To my friends, For the past year or so, I’ve been quietly working on starting my own brand. Growing up, I was always extremely sensitive to the injustices in the world. It affected me profoundly, and I often wondered how, despite our shared humanity, we could sometimes treat each other with such cruelty. Thankfully, I believe that light and goodness prevail, and there is far more beauty in the world than darkness. After moving to Japan and raising my two children here, I came across the word “gaijin.” While this word was always used in a non-offensive way toward me (and many of my foreign friends here), I’ve learned that some foreigners in Japan have experienced it differently, feeling a sense of exclusion or negativity. As with many words, context is key—but instead of focusing on the negative, I wanted to reclaim it with positivity and light. With Local Gaijin, my goal is to transform this word into something that brings people together, sparking unity, smiles, and perhaps a few laughs along the way. You can read more about my brand’s mission and the vision behind reclaiming this word on our page. Please take a moment to follow my new account and keep an eye out for future merchandise. I’m just getting started, but your support, love, encouragement and patience would mean the world to me. Stay tuned, local gaijins—exciting things are on the way 🛸 @thelocal.gaijin by @michellemabellem

From farm to table—she does it all 🌾 My friend Kana is a rice sommelier and the owner of Tsurugi Rice, and the care she puts into every step is unreal. She grows it. She perfects it. She sells it. Go support her and taste some of the best rice in Japan 🤍 Featuring Grant Badger #oscars #rice #japan #japan_of_insta #japanesefood by @michellemabellem
