“StoneSchein 2026”. I have an amazing collaboration going with the super-talented painter & sculptor @michellestoneart . Artists, out of necessity, create rules for themselves. Otherwise, decisions would be random & arbitrary. But there is an inherent paradox in an artist following rules — even their own — because art-making at its best frequently involves the overturning of tradition & the breaking of rules. The challenge as an artist, as I see it, is to never let your own rules become a self-imposed prison cell. I’m sure there are some artists who are perfectly content recreating over & over again the same art — almost like a meditative practice — for 50-plus years. But that is not the way that Michelle & I have gone about it. I mention this because when I suggested to Michelle that I could print some of my AI imagery onto art paper for the purpose of having her paint on it in any way she wanted, with no restrictions, she jumped on it like an 18-year-old boy might jump on his first girlfriend (after permission was given, of course). & I believe the results speak for themselves by @michellestoneart

“StoneSchein 2026”. This apocalyptic bit of insanity is the result of the collaboration between me, a digital/AI artist, & the extraordinarily talented painter @michellestoneart

No doubt, this collaboration is going to send the AI-haters into a terminal fugue state. This morning I woke up to find that someone commented in Instagram on my post advertising the show I have opening on May 1st with 2 painters (more about that in a minute).

The commenter declared that the gallery we are exhibiting at does not have a right to exist if it’s showing AI-generated imagery. Literally, this is what they said. One of the painters who I’m exhibiting with then made a rather lengthy attempt to defend me, only to then subsequently be queried as to whether or not his defense was also AI-generated. I mention this here because it is entirely relevant to my ongoing & profoundly inspiring collaboration with the painter Michelle Stone.

Our process involves my printing my AI pictures on art paper & her painting on top of them, creating a unique, provocative marriage of the old & new technologies. Had either one of us been closed off to new paths artists can take, we would each still be cowering in our own little self-constructed silos.

The show I have opening on May 1st, 6 to 10pm @chicagograndgallery (at 2842 W Chicago Ave) called “Without Permission” (an apt title). It includes me & 2 fabulous painters, @kevinclawler & @paulsierraart

Although the show is being curated by @prysiazhniuk.art (the gallery director of Chicago Grand Gallery), I’m the one who brought these 2 remarkable painters to the gallery, so clearly I am not threatened by or in competition with those who are working in traditional media, & they are supportive of my working using new technology.

“StoneSchein 2026”. The amazing @michellestoneart & I are engaged in a phenomenal collaboration. Incredibly, we seem to be reading each other’s minds. I won’t expound on Michelle’s working process, but I’m pretty sure it’s intuitive, fearless, & likely beyond the reach of language. I can say that this picture in particular is a remarkable depiction as to what’s in my dreams just prior to awakening. I am NOT a morning person. The first thing I do when I arise is check for injuries that may have occurred while I was asleep. This process is similar to the cautious probing of an EMT coming upon the victim of a bike accident on the road. Once I have determined that there are no medical emergencies requiring immediate attention, I attempt to dispel the demons — some of them pictured here — that were assaulting me when I was in my defenseless somnolent state. The medium is digital print on paper & paint.
