In October 2026, we’re talking about LOVE, Venus, and how to find it in a birth chart (using astrology!) 🫀🌹💐🍀🪐✨🫧🍓🤸🏼‍♂️🧘‍♀️. We’ll be reading from bell hooks’ All About Love to help us identify what really encompasses the art of loving, and using it as a reference, explore the world of Venus, as she is.

We’ll be talking all things Venus (and essential dignity!), Venus (in a nativity!), the lot of Union, the lot of Eros, and the 7th house! And how to use these to maybe… find the love of your life ?!?!?!?!?!?!?!? (Or on the flip side, also welcome the fact that Love can be and is equally just as ineffable…..)

For this month, basic understanding of astrology is encouraged.

SEPTEMBER’S BOOK CLUB: Life and Training of an Astrologer (what it’s like, what it takes, and how to hone your astrological practice!) 🧙🏼‍♀️🧚🏻👁️📖🫶🏼

September’s assigned reading comes from Firmicus Maternus’ Mathesis, an astrological text dated to around (latest) 337 AD. Deriving from a senatorial class, born and raised in Italy, Firmicus Maternus was originally a lawyer who began taking interest in astrology. He dedicates the Mathesis to his friend, Lollanius Matorvius, a very affluent, well connected man, offering to translate Greek astrological texts into Latin for him.

The Mathesis is an eight book compendium of judicial astrology, made specifically to teach accurate forecasting of events by way of tracking planetary and celestial movements, as well as symbolism. Firmicus writes during a complicated and fascinating time in history, seeing the rise of Christianity violently clash with the Pagan roots of astrological practices. Firmicus appears to have lived during the reign of Constantine the Great, the first Roman Emperor to convert to Christianity, mentioning him by name many times in the Mathesis.

For September’s (2026) Book Club, we’ll be reading chapter XXX (30) from the Mathesis titled, “Life and Training of an Astrologer.” We will be discussing what it takes to study this art, the ethics involved, what it’s like to live the life of an astrologer, and the difference between client work and astrological work (how they differ and how they come together!). This is a great month specifically for those who want to start offering readings to other people, for those curious to what it’s like to offer astrological services, and a look into how astrology actually works in a client space.

This August for the Book Club… HOW TO FIND YOUR NATURAL BENT!

Have you ever wondered what the stars could tell you about your life? Especially what you should DO with your life? Your vocation, and profession?

Marsilio Ficino is one of the first traditional astrologers to take on a weirdly modern approach to astrology. He, himself, was against using astrology for predictive purposes, believing that it constricted man’s free will, defending it against the “determinism of those professional astrologers,” in his Disputatio contra iudicium astrologorum (Disputation Against the Judgement of Astrologers) in 1477.

Instead, he’s one of the first to take on a psychological view of astrology, ascribing personality traits, essences, and modes of character to humans, based on the quality of the stars.

His approach is one that mirrors most closely how astrology is viewed, and used today. Come learn how to find your natural bent through Ficino’s methods by looking at your own personal birth chart!

This is a question I get asked most often.. WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH MY LIFE? WELL! FICINO HAS COME TO HELP!

You can sign up for August’s Book Club now, link in my bio :)

THIS JULY FOR THE BOOK CLUB… ASTROLOGICAL TEMPERAMENT!

Before there were any modern psychological personality types, there was the concept of temperament, which gages how Hot, Cold, Dry, and Wet someone’s baseline soul, and character could be. Although originating from early modern medical practices, temperament can be calculated through the quality of the planets in a person’s personal birth chart. For example, this explains why someone could be a Leo Sun, yet not identify with the usual archetypes for Leo: loud, bold, and extroverted.. it’s probably because the overall temperament of your chart might signify the opposite!

I was incredibly fascinated to see how prominent the concept of temperament had been during my first year at the University of Amsterdam, studying Western Esotericism. It is a foundational concept in many traditions of magic, and alchemy (for example, it came up in Eliphas Lévi’s “The Doctrine and Ritual of High Magic” as well as Marsilio Ficino’s “De vita libri tres”). We’ll be reading from Avelar and Ribeiro’s “On the Heavenly Spheres”, and learning how to calculate our own! You’ll leave this month’s Book Club knowing much more about the quality of the signs, and the planets, as well as your temperament type: Sanguine, Choleric, Melancholic, or Phlegmatic.

Tickets are available on my website now! See you there! X by @michelliu

This June, we’ll explore a text from the 2nd century astrologer, Vettius Valens, and his descriptions of the 7 traditional planets. We’ll learn the planetary essences, their archetypes, and images and how to apply them to a natal chart. by @michelliu

Take, read by @michelliu

in traditional astrology, the technical term “sect” distinguishes the difference between day charts (diurnal), and night charts (nocturnal). people born during the day have the Sun as their main luminary, since the Sun is responsible for bringing light to the day time. on the other hand, people born at night have the Moon as their main luminary, since the Moon brings light to the night time. this difference is important! since it changes what we, astrologers, call the “natal promise.”

the day time natal promise is much more public facing, and about success in the day time. think about what we do during the day. we go to work, we clock in. the day time planets (Sun, Jupiter, Saturn) are responsible for upholding our legacies. our reputations then become more important, the “work” we do becomes important, our legacies become important.

the night time natal promise is much more personal. think about what we do in the night time- we rest, we party, we see our friends, we meet lovers, we indulge in hobbies. the night time planets (Moon, Venus, Mars), help us navigate the complexity of human relationships. so the night time natal promise could be much more relational - are we happy, are we nourished, are we loved? it can also be a much more creative, much more about the personal creative path, than “what we must do,” which is more reflective of the day sect natal promise.

obviously there’s much more nuance involved to truly deduct the natal promise, and contradictions exist! (i think it’s what makes us interesting!) - nevertheless, using this technique can help us distinguish if we relate more to the Sun, or the Moon. so... which team are you in? the day, or the night?
