Tomorrow my new short film The Blind will have its first screening @brusselsshort For this short film we headed on an adventure to the stormy island of Île d’Ouessant in the Atlantic Ocean. We did this with a heartwarming cast of all very talented actors that are going through life with a visual impairment. Surrounded by protruding rocks, a wild ocean, and the magic of cinema, it was an enchanting adventure. . Next to the short film I captured the island that inspired me to tell this story on film. An island with a lot of mystic as well as cinematic history. . @kraterfilms . @ditmargoes @youssrimejdoubi @tamdyty @nathahuibregtse @kraterfilms @lotharlegon @clemouze87 @franlabarque @maisouis @thoma7 @roberthoebeke @borisgodfroid @sixthefix @susobrino . #mamiyapro645 #ilford #mamiya #iledouessant #ouessant #bretagne #finistere by @michielrobberecht
Excited to announce that THE BLIND will have his first screening and its national premiere @brusselsshort from 26th of April till 06 May. . With its first screening we also gladly reveal the film poster made by @rinusvandevelde . Central for me about telling stories, is having the courage to look beyond the world we already know. I prefer to do it by leaving to places I have never lived before or working with blind actors that perceive the world in a way utterly new to me. Rinus almost never travels but does it on the contrary in his atelier by creating exotic worlds on his paintings as well as in real life decors. We can say that both Rinus and I are enormously curious beings, but in a completely different way, and that is fine. It’s an honor to be able to inspire each other and travel together along The Blind’s story carried by its beautiful cast. . For the dreamers, for the travelers, or like Betty H. Neal sings. “Listen to his tune. He calls it the duty free gift for the traveller.” 🎶 Theme for the Eulipions – Rahsaan Roland Kirk . @kraterfilms #theblind #rinusvandevelde #brusselsshortfilmfestival @vlaamsaudiovisueelfonds . @ditmargoes @youssrimejdoubi @tamdyty @nathahuibregtse @lotharlegon @clemouze87 @franlabarque@maisouis @thoma7 @roberthoebeke @borisgodfroid @sixthefix @susobrino by @michielrobberecht

NEW: The vulnerable peatlands that protect Kenyan communities on the edge of Lake Victoria from floods are also among the Earth’s richest carbon stores. Identifying them is easier said than done; conserving them, even harder. This story by @michielrobberecht is produced by @thexylom and copublished by @meshascience. 𝗟𝗲 𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲𝘁 : 𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻 𝗲𝗻 𝗯𝗶𝗼. ✍️ Célian Macé 📸 Michiel Robberecht @michielrobberecht / Libération by @michielrobberecht
A new story about Jaba juice / Khat I worked on with Célian Macé just got published in @liberationfr Joining a khat chewing gathering in Kibera and documenting the consumption of jaba juice during a night out in Nairobi; we had a good time. . Chewed for centuries in East Africa for its euphoric effects, khat has now been transformed into a fruity drink that is taking Nairobi’s affluent youth by storm. It is a lucrative business that is seeking to expand into export markets. . “Peanuts and chewing gum are passed around to help counter the bitterness of the leaves. “You can stay awake for three days if you keep chewing continuously. I’m telling you, I’ve tried it myself.” Same effect as jaba juice? The people concerned exchange mocking looks: “That’s for the rich! And besides, it’s not the same, it kicks in too fast,” John dismisses with a grimace, as if to say, “That’s cheating.” . Ps: I’ll take it with pride @brian.kiriba , to point me out as the model client for @handasjuice : “The typical customer? “That’s him!” the businessman laughs, pointing to Libération’s photographer. “A thirtysomething from Nairobi; creative, working to meet deadlines, with a certain amount of purchasing power, and someone who goes out partying on the weekends.” . Two weeks ago, the French newspaper @liberationfr published a story on Kenya’s “Goons” that I worked on with journalist Célian Macé. . “Sober, I wouldn’t dare to do all that.” . Feared during nearly every protest, these gangs are often hired by political actors to sow chaos by robbing, and assaulting peaceful demonstrators. Their presence has become a powerful tool of fear, discouraging many Kenyans from taking to the streets and letting their voices be heard. But behind this phenomenon lies a broader social and political ecosystem, that willingly exploits the economic hardship and limited opportunities faced by many young men growing up in Nairobi’s disadvantaged neighborhoods, recruiting them into cycles of violence for political gain. While the stories of the victims have rightly received much attention, Célian and I went to listen to the side of the story of the Goons themselves, listening to how they ended up in this system of violence and trying to understand how it exactly works. . 1: “F” 2: “S” . Unfortunately the article is currently only available in French. All names in this article are anonymous. . Written by Célian Macé Photo editing by @lauraclrd Pictures by Myself by @michielrobberecht

Some images of the image story I worked on that was published two weeks ago in the magazine @knack.be in Belgium. The story portrays the young generation of Kenyans, often referred to as Gen Z, fighting for freedom of speech and democratic rights within a political landscape that has a tendency to grow more repressive. . 1: Nairobi CBD 2/3/5: Marion putting politically engaged stickers on the streets of Nairobi. Some feature a caricature of current President Ruto with a prohibition sign over it, hinting at the desire of many for his departure. @nig.wav 4: Portrait of Ian, a nineteen-year-old selling scarves in Nairobi CBD. . Nothing like that in Nairobi. #knack #knackmagazine #inbeeld #kenia by @michielrobberecht
Today a new image story I worked on has been published in @knack.be in Belgium. . It all started on Saturday, 18 October 2025. I was together with my dear friends @nickwambugu and @mauricembui having drinks at Maurice’s place. Just days earlier, Raila Odinga (historic Kenyan opposition leader) had passed away, and I remember how deeply Nick and Maurice were affected by it; speaking with such passion, anger, hope, and urgency about Kenyan politics. It was also the day before the premiere of Nick’s film, @thepeopleshall_film I was moved that weekend; listening to my friends speak, and witnessing the strong energy surrounding Nick’s premiere, I was struck by the political fighting spirit of young Kenyans. It made me realize I wanted to make something about it. That same Saturday in Maurice’s garden, was also the first time Nick fainted. It was the moment we realized something was wrong. A few weeks later, he was diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disease, and Nick passed away only three months later, early Jan. Having this photo story published in Knack, a Belgian news magazine, on this subject; with Nick’s portrait included in it, means a lot to me. The article’s title translates to: “Young Kenyans refuse to let their democracy be taken away.” And features portraits of young Kenyans fighting for their rights to speak up. @directedbydash @mr_wamae karubiu @nig.wav . Available in print, full article will be published online in the coming days. 1. Nick Wambugu, a few days after being diagnosed with a rare bone marrow disease. 2. Article Knack 3. 4. 5. Mark Denver, Chris Wamae and Brian Adagala having lunch without their deeply missed comrade and colleague Nick Wambugu. .
