©️ Morel.
Mixed media on 120gsm matte.

Back on the shrooms, the gift that keeps on giving.
Morel is an interesting fungi.
The novel 'Hothouse' by Bryan Aldiss is brilliant.
The earth long ago destroyed by nuclear war and knocked off its axis has stopped rotating, the half still facing the sun has become one huge impenetrable jungle, inhabited by monstrous carnivorous plant type creatures.
Humans have evolved. There are very few left living in small family groups, being 18 inches in height and greenish in colour, and having no knowledge of their past, they exist to survive, that is until a piece of fungi a Morel drops onto the head of our hero, Morel holds the history of the world within its mycelium network and educates Gren all the while growing like a parasite on his head!
Needless to say, our diminutive hero saves the day (sort of), but as a kid, I really enjoyed the story, so as a tiny tribute, I've included a few bits of Morel fungi in this piece.
I hope you like it!

©️ When I first started collaborating with a local organic grower, I loved the brief, free reign!
(Not free range😁)

Clients come in all shapes and sizes from all walks of life.
The kind I prefer gives you the space to scribble outside the lines.
This first piece, 'oyster mushrooms' kicked off an organic relationship where I was free to keep researching and developing artwork in my own style.
The mushroom is an astonishing organism. Science is only just beginning to scratch the surface of their health benefits. The more I read, the more I created often working into the early hours, but this is my process. Once awakened, I can't shut it off.

Here, we've taken the primary design and sublimated it onto organic cotton using water-based dyes for a minimal impact on the environment.
Lisa worked tirelessly to ensure she minimised our footprint, and I think she has pulled a rabbit out of the hat, preserving the integrity of my original a3 artwork! No detail or colour has been lost, which can so easily happen when translating original art through p.c. to surface print.
I don't trust anyone else with my artwork! Lisa totally understands my work she treats it with sensitivity and respect, her quality control, and understanding design, making sure the end product is a quality item.
I can't thank her enough!
I hope you like this beautiful apron!

©️ 5 years before lockdown, I started compulsively doodling these little monsters everywhere, on scrap paper in sketchbooks.
I think the first rendering was in a spiral bound a6 pocket book to which I added yellows and lime greens.
For years, I subconsciously scrawled this motif on every piece of paper or fabric. Obviously, this sketch is more refined.
Was it a warning of things to come? I have no idea, but when images of the covid strain first appeared on the news, I snapped out of it and was able to move on and doodle other things.
This strangeness has happened to me more than once. I think it's more than a coincidence.
Does anyone have any thoughts?

Mixing disco and house/acid?

Always felt sorry for the guy who originally created the smiley (Harvey Ball) but never copyrighted it. 😔

I think it was created for an internal company initiative to cheer up staff?
Anyway, for those of us who were alive and kicking through the real disco years and were hit with disco fever lips were a prominent logo thing so I thought I'd slap them on the smiley, a logo that became popularised again in the 80s due to the growing house music scene which then morphed into acid, acid/house!

I think it looks cute. But I don't think it'll be catching on anytime soon?

Kitsch
The rise of Kitsch and the death of art.
Every gallery,giftshop,fayre,market,
streetwall, stall, art café, art department is filled to the brim with digitally enhanced, tweaked, cutesy, branded, merched, soulless, plagiarised and ripped off trash.

Enough to stuff a fucking landfill site to the brim!
All bought in the vain hope it's exclusively made for the purchaser and will accrue in value.

Instead of buying mass-produced tat from corporate outlets, the 'art' buying public seeks it out elsewhere, and it's being replaced by 'the makers' poring over the Internet for hours looking for an original idea then like magpies they appropriate someone else's hard work give it a cheeky twist and hey presto!
Invent their own merch brand, slapping their logo on everything they stick their bastardised 'art' upon, packing it all up in their cutesy containers and making sure by hook or by crook their stuff is placed in every small makers outlet within reach of their bloody fuel tank.
Whilst the real artists carry on watching from the sidelines as another trend with a limited shelf life comes and goes.

Michael Myers ticket art ©️
Halloween 1978.
John Carpenter.
Michael Myers still remains one of my favourite horror movie villains.
The original film has to be the best in the series.
It began to suggest a slightly supernatural element to him. He couldn't be killed and seemed to possess an almost superhuman strength.

©️ "It rubs the lotion on its skin, or it gets the hose again!"

Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine)
The silence of the lambs. (Thomas Harris)
A number of monstrous & depraved men influenced the creation of this fictional character, primarily Ed Gein & Gary Heidnik.
What truly created the explosion of these aberrant human beings, nature or nurture? Was it Vietnam? The building of the super highway networks? During taped interviews, most of them reference their upbringing and their dysfunctional relationships with their parent(s)
Yet shamefully, the press seems to play a role almost egging them on as the public hunger for more information.

The victims and their families and friends always are forgotten, the unimaginable suffering caused as these strange humans become almost canonised, revered, mythologised.
This is a time in history that will hopefully be reflected upon unfavourably, I think by future generations.

@northern_tidelines collaboration.

John presented me with an a3 contact type sheet with 6 local images ripe for muralling.

His idea was to place grafitti on the buildings he'd photographed, always keen for a challenge.
This first piece I've tried (formally earning a living as a mural painter) to put some sowester and bearded fisherman with a heavily weathered face. (Bit of a self-portrait)
Never retouched photos too much before, but hey, ho, I'll have a go!
Thoughts?
