This is my take on spending time in Bali after being home for two weeks.
Bali was a safe space for me to regulate myself. I didn’t realize how calm and relaxed I felt until I returned back to Utah. I felt very open and receptive to new ideas, people and adventures. I don’t know if it was the sun, meeting new people, the yoga, or just the energy, but I felt regulated and more connected to the more natural, pure and loving self. I was easy on myself and slowly allowed myself to open up.
My first week back home was really nice, I felt regulated and anchored. This week, I’ve noticed myself falling into old feelings and thought patterns, which has me feeling frozen. I had an idea this might happen, and it’s completely normal!
I believe that regulating your nervous system away from where it was shaken up can be great. Although now that I’m back, it’s a much bigger challenge/learning lesson that requires more conscious effort to regulate.
Opening up in an environment where I’ve had so many personal experiences can feel violating.
But without Bali, and feeling regulated and safe, I wouldn’t know if it was a possibility at home (which I’m finding that home is more of a feeling anyway).
Bali taught me that it’s safe to open myself up. That perceived threats aren’t real threats. That humans are humans, and we all want connection and love. That it’s safe to say hi to a stranger at a cafe. I allowed time to do its thing and soften my edges.
