Quilo Número 2 - Praia da Saudade.

Saudade is an elusive thing. Far flung, fleeting, yet forever present. It ripples on you, with a constant desire for something other than here and now. In these tropical shores, of endless green forests, and deep blue seas, paradise is pervaded by a dreamy languor imbued with the continuous longing for the happiness of a familiar place or time. A rose-tinted shimmer that is never fully grasped nor fulfilled. Quilo Praia da Saudade was born from this deep sense of yearning and nostalgia for a place suspended in memory. Though this edition is not simply a love letter to what was left behind, nor a wistful glance toward the past. Rather, it is a meditation on Saudade itself—in all its forms. This issue is a wandering through that feeling, impossible to translate, yet instantly understood. It is the tremor between love and loss, the scent that lingers after a person’s gone, the unbearable weight of what was left behind and can never be retrieved. Through photographs and fragments, this edition follows this vibration—how it inhabits images and how it echoes in lives, landscapes and words. From Caia Marvento Ramalho’s hazy overlays of her own photographs and her parents’ holiday archives, to Gleeson Paulino’s lyrical documentation of Indigenous culture, ecosystems and cosmologies under threat, to Fe Avila’s portraits captured through a computer screen during the isolation of the pandemic—each work speaks, directly or obliquely, to this feeling.
Across these works, Saudade becomes a lens through which to consider how photographs preserve and
erode—how they carry what can no longer be touched, yet refuse to let it vanish entirely. Here, in these shores Saudade is both mirror and tide. It pushes, it pulls, it never lets go.

A few selects from the on going project Brighter Than The Sun documenting the remnants of the Caribbean exodus in a corner of East London and my own fragments of an migrant experience in the UK under the 14 years of Tory disgraceful governance and mistreatment of migrants in the shadow of Windrush scandal and beyond. by @micotoledo

All these things happen in the blazing summer under the trees in the park on the grass with daffodils and tulips in full bloom and a sky of blue oh it does really be beautiful then to hear the birds whistling and see the green leaves come back on the trees and in the night the world turn upside down and everyone hustling that is life that is London…

I don’t really know what I’m doing most of the time. I am mostly chasing light, shadow, shapes and people. I love people. I love the many little worlds they inhabit that I know nothing about and I feel lucky to enter them, albeit shortly I get to live their life as if it was mine. I love slipping into other people’s lives as I take a glimpse at another possible life and existence to me. I try to capture the images that are in my head as if the world was a movie. I wish the whole world was made into movie stills as I navigate East london and I see beauty in the gritty world around me that I and many others turned into their home. I see bricks, concrete, fences and stones and see what people made out of this unwanted part of London. And I digress in my writing, my photography and my wandering.

It makes me think of a song by David Byrne - one of my all time favourite called Glass Concrete and Stone where he sings: “Glass, concrete and stone. It is just a house, not a home. I’m waking at the crack of dawn to send a little money home.”

Hackney Riviera. A magical otherworldly place in a corner of East London. It makes me think Afro-Surrealism and this opening quote by Amiri Baraka comes to mind:

“Dumas's power lay in his skill at creating an entirely different world organically connected to this one. The stories are fables; a mythological presence pervades. They are morality tales, magical resonating dream emotions and images; shifting ambiguous terror,
mystery, implied revelation. But they are also stories of real life, now or whenever, constructed in weirdness and poetry in which the contemporaneity of essential themes is clear.”

I still have about 5 copies of Quilo - Journal Of Photographic Tales from Brasil, left.

The 320-page publication designed in collaboration with @porto_rocha and featuring an incredible array of Brazilian photographic talent was already this year featured in all the major art publications and recently got awarded by the ZUM festival as one of the best photo publications in Brazil. It comes packed with incredible photographic projects and short stories by Geovani Martins, Milton Hatoum, amongst other Brazilian great writers.

If we don’t recover our 150 copies left that were essentially stolen from Motto Books this is the last remaining copies of Quilo available in my hands.

There are still some copies of Quilo kicking about in some nice art book stores around Europe and US but they’re quickly dwindling down.

So if you’re looking for a artsy gift this Christmas, look not further. Get your copy of Quilo in the link in bio jornalquilo.com before they’re gone gone.

More and more I try to create painting like images and look for paintings instead of photos as sources of inspiration. The third image is a painting of one of my favourite artists Elladj Lincy Deloumeaux by @micotoledo

On another shameless self promotional post I’m super proud to have the photo of Abraham (part of my ongoing project documenting the Caribbean exodus in East London) being selected to the @bjp1854 Portrait of Britain Award 2023.

The yearly award organised by British Journal of Photography selects the best portraits that capture a broad selection of the many faces and cultures that make up the fabric of this incredible Island and its an award that I was always super into but never managed to submit my work in time. Luckily this year I remembered the submission date 🤞

The portrait of Abraham will be displayed in Billboards across the country and published in Portrait of Britain Vol.6 published by @bluecoatpress so get your copy of the book in the link in my bio if you’re interested in seing this plus many other deep and inspiring portraits within Britain.

Thanks @bjp1854 and the jury for choosing this image together with other amazing portraits in this year’s prize. 🏆🔥🙏

Thanks y’all for reading

I am super excited to be selected as one of the best photo books by Brazil’s Zum Photo @revistazum Festival 2023 by Instituto Moreira Salles @imoreirasalles amongst other incredible publications.

There are 45 selected books from Brazil and beyond and Quilo is amongst them. 🔥🔥📕📕

As a love letter to Brazilian visual culture and as a safe space to highlight communities and artists across Brazil I couldn’t be happier to be included in the most important photo festival in Brazil with Quilo, highlighting the importance and talent in this beautiful country of mine. I’m happy to be able to condense a tiny part of it in these pages.

We have only 5 copies of Quilo left ( after 200 being stolen by @mottobooks and still in litigation) so if you want to acquire a copy be quick as there’s only five left in our personal stock.

Thanks for all the artists, photographers, writers and designers involved in Quilo. I owe a lot to you. @porto_rocha @leoportooo @feliperocha @nat.wrk @vitorcarvalho and everyone that helped put this crazy dream and love letter to Brazil together with me. ❤️🇧🇷

E muito obrigado ao festival @revistazum @imoreirasalles pelo reconhecimento e por incluir a Quilo nessa seleção incrível. É demais fazer parte deste programa novamente depois de estar representando o festival em 2019 com o livro Velho Chico.

Bonez & Peter
Homerton M.O.T centre 2021

This is one of my favourite shots from my project so far. It highlights the essential business and the fabric of the community in Homerton and Clapton. It’s people like Bonez and Peter and businesses like theirs that make the neighbourhood as they manage to resist the incoming gentrification encroaching from every side in London. It was amazing to spend a sunny afternoon hanging out with them and gladly all starts aligned when I made this shot. ( plus other 4 rolls of bad shots 😭😂) by @micotoledo
