The first time I came to Germany, I tried to make sense of my foreign presence in this country.
I looked at an image of a snake eating its own tail, an alchemical symbol for endless cycles and the relationship between birth and death…but I cannot help but think that it must hurt to bite yourself in order to become a symbol…a token. I wonder … What if we listened to the snake? How does it feel to change skin every season? Which paths did you cross before? What did those landscapes look like?

Ouroboras deepens our different diasporic experiences through textiles, painting, installation and photography. Melissa Antier Cárdenas, Sara Lucía Castillo, Sofía Mariaca and Katya Kanke come together in the Vorfluter Space to share charms and intimate stories of protection, uplifting adaptability with tenderness and fantasy. The photograph of a friend, hair from a loved one, bees, wool, wax and earth enter in dialogue, not only to evoque memories but also to energize our present. We invite guest artists and the audience to give life to an open program, activating the shared space with video, reading, performance and sound, expanding the many manifestations of existing in shifting identities and territories.

Para saber a dónde vas, tienes que saber de dónde vienes. Nosotras que venimos de distintos territorios, tenemos un pie aquí y otro allá pero con el corazón bien puesto y decidido.

Dentro del marco de nuestra exposición grupal “Ouroboras” queremos ocupar el espacio de la galería para activarlo y compartirlo con nuestra comunidad migrante. Hemos preparado una selección de videos de Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, México y Berlín que atraviesan fronteras geográficas y de la memoria para recordarnos de dónde somos y qué lugares son posibles habitar si confiamos en la ternura, la digna rabia, la fantasía y la comunidad. 💗⚔️🌱 ♡

Después del repertorio de videos, habrá micrófono abierto para aquellxs que quieran leer poemas, contar chismes o leer trabalenguas. Además, habrá bebidas y comida porque a estómago lleno, corazón contento <3

In order to know where you’re going, first you have to know where you come from. Even though we come from different territories and live far away, our hearts are set firmly and determinated (∩｀-´)⊃━♡ﾟ.*･｡ﾟ

As part of our group exhibition *Ouroboras*, we want to take over the gallery space to bring it to life, activate it and share it with our dear migrant community. We have prepared a selection of videos from Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Mexico, and Berlin that cross geographical borders and memories to remind us of where we come from and what futures are possible if we trust in tenderness, fantasy, community, and resistance. 💞⚔️🌱

Introducing
Mélissa Antier Cardenas, Sara Lucia Castillo, Katya Kanke and Sofia Mariaca

Mélissa Antier Cardenas (1999, FR) is a polyform artist of Mexican Reunionese roots. Her practice dialogues between painting, performance, and fibber art. She has been based in Berlin since 2023 where she teaches art and is engaged with the collective Ciudad Migrante.

Sara Lucia Castillo (2001, CO) multidisciplinary artist, currently studying at UdK and FU Berlin. She works across painting, sound, poetry and performance.

Katya Kanke (1985, RU) Currently lives and works in Hamburg. An artist working in the genres of photography and performance, she explores themes of corporeality, trauma, and crisis.

Sofia Mariaca (2001, BO) is a Bolivian artist studying in Weissensee School of Art. Using materials such as textiles, old photographs, hair, and earth, she seeks to weave personal stories with collective memories. She has made a one year exchange in La Esmeralda in Mexico City.

Liquid tells to melt down back to myself.

Performance – 25 min - Ice cube doll house, nails, hammer; sugar, safety pins.

This auto fictional monologue navigates the fluidity of my Mexican and Reunionese family roots. The narration builds around the element of water, based on the concepts of Hydro Feminism and the Mexica philosophy of happiness trough error acceptance: “Resbaladiza, escuridiza es la tierra.”
The tell is accompanied by movement, manipulating an imposing ice cube shaped like a doll house. Towards the end, the house get shattered, as a metaphor of the fragmentation experienced by people in diaspora. With this effort, I search to be channelled trough the discomfort of the cold while compromising to a remembrance act.

À Noël, quand je suis retournée à La Réunion, j’ai coupé les cheveux de Papy Jo. Il s’est trouvé très beau et a même dit qu’il se sentait comme à l’époque de son service militaire. J’ai gardé les cheveux tombés au sol, puis, maintenant que nous sommes à nouveau loin l’un de l’autre, je les ai feutrés pour penser à lui. Je l’ai connecté à ses enfants, petits-enfants et arrière-petits-enfants, la plupart d’entre eux sont à l’île et l’entourent.
Moi, j’ai toujours habité en dehors de l’île. Il y a un an, je lui avais déjà écrit un poème en utilisant uniquement des grains de riz pour l’honorer. Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais les grains de riz me font penser à la patience, et l’une des qualités que j’admire chez mon papy, c’est justement sa patience. J’adore aussi quand il cuisine son riz cantonais.
Puis j’ai essayé de recréer un combava ; leur texture cérébrale me fait penser à la mémoire élastique de mon grand-père. Avec ma mamie, ils avaient l’habitude de prendre pleins petites notes dans des petits carnets Clairefontaine. J’ai toujours du mal à leur offrir un livre qu’ils n’aient pas déjà lu. J’aime quand il nous dit qu’on a eu du pot d’avoir voyagé avec ma sœur, et qu’il énnonce des phrases en anglais et en espagnol qu’il a apprises par cœur il y a des décennies.
Quand je l’imagine, il porte toujours son polo vert. Quand je ferme les yeux, parfois je l’imagine aussi. Je l’entends doucement traverser la chambre (que l’on appelle chez nous « la chambre de passage ») pour descendre au salon, car il se réveille toujours avant tout le monde. taken in Cilaos, île de la Réunion by @microbe___

I am showing my art at Ringbar this Thursday 27th ! 🩷🙂‍↔️ I will show a selection of artworks made in the last 2 years. This body of work mirrors my adaptation process to Berlin, while echoing current topics like the housing crisis, migrational grief, the search for solemnity in the individualist- capitalis western world !
I am super excited because I used to live by the Ringbar and Sonnenale has a spot in my heart . Also this is a pefect ocasion to gather all the people I love in Berlin, and share an artsy evening with tacos !!! by @microbe___
