‘With Time’ by Microfiche is out now!

Two distinct sound worlds can be heard on With Time: alongside the acoustic orientation Microfiche have become well known for, they introduce a new electric sound with prominent use of keyboards, samples and post-production. The band first explored this sonic terrain during their 2021 residency at Redfern's 107 Projects, and in the intervening years they have significantly expanded their incorporation of synths, electric bass, SPDs and electronics into their music, with the new album celebrating the hybrid of the old and new.

So pleased to be back after 6 weeks. 'I Sat In One Place Until It Became Many' was Tuesday's theme and the title of the Microfiche song I played. I don’t know the meaning behind that title from the band's perspective, but it made me think of two things. The first, a lot of the playlist is what I was listening to on the plane home from Europe, working my way through radio submissions, through albums I’d been meaning to listen to. It’s amazing to me how fast the time can go, where you can go, when all you are doing is listening. But it also made me think of the theme I did right before I left and some of the conversations it started with listeners during that show and since. About passive listening vs undivided listening, and I really appreciated that many of you said that you listen to this show and the music we hear together in an undivided way. Some of you, as it turns out, sit or lie there and do nothing else but listen to this show. Somewhere there’s a meaning in that which sounds a bit like I Sat In One Place Until It Became Many.

‘I Sat In One Place Until It Became Many’ is out now!

This is the second single from upcoming album ‘With Time’ by Sydney collective ‘Mircofiche’!

The track explores immersion, and the richness that can be uncovered through openness to your surroundings. The piece was inspired by the many sunsets composer Sam Gill has watched over the bushlands of Glenbrook in the lower Blue Mountains. This track is one of the most sonically distinct the band have recorded, fully delving into its new electric sound.

~ Well well well, the time has come ~ 🔮
The second single from our upcoming album is out today !

𝑰 𝑺𝒂𝒕 𝒊𝒏 𝑶𝒏𝒆 𝑷𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒆 𝑼𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒍 𝒊𝒕 𝑩𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒎𝒆 𝑴𝒂𝒏𝒚
penned by Sam, is a meditation on immersion: slowing down, observing everything around you with openness, and discovering the richness that gradually reveals itself. This idea encapsulates the title of our upcoming album -
𝑾𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑻𝒊𝒎𝒆.

Sonically, this track presents a radical aesthetic shift for the band, embracing a new electric sound. The music is soaked in shimmering synths and propelled by a gently simmering percussion groove, sliced through by a slowly unfolding viola/piano melody.

You’ll be hearing more of this new sound when the full album releases on June 12!

Out on all platforms, tell your friends x

The second singe ‘I Sat In One Place Until It Became Many’ from the upcoming Microfiche album ‘With Time’ is out tomorrow!

Microfiche are a long-running collective of six of Australia’s most creative and boundary-pushing improvising musicians. Since forming in 2015, Microfiche’s individual members have become some of Australia’s most cutting-edge and esteemed improvisers, and collectively as an ensemble they have developed their own recognisable aesthetic and a strong shared musical telepathy. Their music emerges from a lineage of Australian acts as diverse as The Necks, Simon Barker and The Australian Art Orchestra, forging a distinctive and celebrated approach all their own. The group folds together beautifully composed and orchestrated compositions, meditative soundscapes, electronics and timbral explorations with post-rock arcs and energetic free-jazz eruptions. This is music with a vanguard spirit.

Max Alduca - electric & acoustic basses; Nick Calligeros - trumpet; Holly Conner - drums & percussion, electronics, production, and piano (track 2); Sam Gill - alto & soprano saxophones, percussion (track 3); Novak Manojlovic - piano, keyboards, and electronics; Phillippa Murphy-Haste - clarinet & bass clarinet, viola (track 3).
