Before you decide microcement “isn’t worth it”, look a little closer.

Most people compare it to tiles.
Some compare it to polished concrete.

Both can seem cheaper at first.
That’s not where the difference shows up.

Because once everything is installed, you’re often left with:
	•	Grout lines that never stay clean
	•	Visual breaks that stop the space from flowing
	•	Cracks, movement, and patchwork fixes over time
	•	Transitions and trims that interrupt the finish

This is usually when we get the call.

What serious renovators are choosing instead is a fully sealed microcement system designed to:
→ Eliminate grout lines and surface breaks
→ Flow seamlessly across floors, bathrooms, and walls
→ Perform in wet and dry areas without changing materials
→ Deliver long-term durability, not just a good first impression

The result isn’t just how it looks on day one.
It’s how it holds up years later.

At MicroLux Finishes, we don’t install decorative concrete.
We install engineered microcement systems built for real use.

If microcement isn’t right for your space, we’ll tell you straight.

Small dark tiles and black mirrors were working against this space, not for it. Now it's one seamless finish and the room actually feels bigger, even though nothing physically changed size wise.

A good tip in here that most people wouldn't think to check, the internal corners. If they're clean and consistent throughout a space, that tells you a lot about the installer without even asking a single question. by @microlux_aus

This is the part most people never see before they book, the actual assessment. Moisture, water behind the walls, drummy tiles, all checked before anything gets installed. Worth watching if you're wondering what actually happens before the transformation.

A recent client told us they could tell we don't cut corners, and the funny thing is, they said that before we'd even started the job.

It's usually the prep work that gives it away. Anyone can talk a good game about the finish, but moisture testing and a full substrate assessment across an entire ground floor isn't something you can fake or rush. It's slow, it's not photogenic, and it's the part that never makes it into a portfolio shot. But it's also the reason a floor that size can run seamlessly through a whole home with no joins and no grout lines breaking it up.

Whole ground floor projects like this one in Hampton are a different kind of job to a single bathroom. Every doorway, every level change, every transition between rooms has to be planned for before the first bag of product gets mixed. Get that groundwork wrong and it shows up everywhere at once, not just in one room.

If you're thinking about something at this scale, contact us and we'll talk you through what the process actually involves. by @microlux_aus

One small detail that makes a bigger difference than people expect: ambient lighting.

Microcement already gives you that seamless, calm look, but lighting is what actually brings it to life. When you've got a textured finish and you light it properly, you can see the craftsmanship in it, the way the light catches the surface changes depending on the angle and time of day.

We usually recommend ceiling sensors as well. It sounds like a small thing, but if you're walking into the bathroom at night, you don't want to be hit with the main lights. A soft sensor light means you walk in, it switches on low and subtle, and the whole space still feels calm instead of waking you up completely.

It's a simple addition but it changes how the whole room feels, not just how it looks. by @microlux_aus

Rob's renovating his forever home in St Kilda and wanted bathrooms that could each have their own personality.

What stood out to him wasn't just the finish, it was the honesty in the process, realistic timeframes, and us handling things well outside just the microcement.

Good one to watch if you're weighing up whether to go with tiles again or try something different.

Most people choose a microcement installer the same way they'd choose a painter. Get a few quotes, pick the one that sounds good and feels right, and go with it.

The problem is microcement isn't paint. It's a system, and the prep work underneath it matters just as much as the finish on top. A lot of the bathrooms we hear about that crack or fail within a year weren't let down by the product. They were let down by someone skipping steps before the job even started, because it's not something you can see once the floor's done.

That's the tricky part for homeowners. You're trusting someone based on how they talk, not on what they actually do behind the scenes. And by the time you find out they cut corners, the job's finished and the tiles are gone.

If you're partway through getting quotes and something feels off, or you just want a second opinion before you sign anything, send it through and we'll have a look. by @microlux_aus

Four bathrooms, one St Kilda project, and every single one went straight over the existing tiles. No demo. Just moisture checks, prep, and the microcement system on top.

The client said it best at the end though, they came to us just for microcement and we ended up handling the whole job.

Got tiles you're over looking at? Get in touch and we'll tell you if this could work for your place too. by @microlux_aus
