Hidden plastic is my favorite topic now that l’ve become a microplastics researcher!

There’s so many things that we don’t know is made out of or contain plastics!

Here’s just a part of the list of things that I learned about as a microplastic researcher!
Thankfully, there are alternatives for most if not for all of these.

Making this a recurring series: things you didn’t know were actually plastic ✨

As a microplastics researcher, I learned so many different sources of microplastics and so many of them were unexpected for me!

Personal care products, wet wipes, chewing gum, aluminium cans, paper cups, face masks…and so on.

In today’s part it’s about;
Chewing gums
Face masks
Wet wipes

Pasting this from research about chewing gum I read:
“Chewing gums released 4–636 microplastics g−1 to saliva.”

And what research says about wet wipes: “A higher number of MP fibres (693–1066 p/sheet) was released when the wet wipe was exposed to the aquatic environment compared to rubbing the wet wipe on hands or solid materials (180–106 p/sheet) or both. In particular, wet wipes in the wet state released the highest number (1966 p/sheet) of MP fibres.”

Some things I learned during my research I wish I never knew…

However, now that I know these, I realize that we need actions!

Whether that’s individual action of trying to minimize your plastic consumption or collective action for demanding changes - we NEED it!

1. There’s tons of hidden plastic sources. Chewing gum, skincare, paper cups, soda cans, teabags, cigarettes and the list goes on. If you didn’t know these contain plastic, you should learn more.

2. No, your government doesn’t regulate microplastics. Not in the water that is discharged directly into our rivers and oceans, not in the water we literally drink. It’s THE time to start caring and demand regulations!

3. Cute top from SHEIN? A new labubu trend? These are shedding microplastics into our air as we speak. Stop with these trends for cheap plastic.

4. Meat, fish and highly processed food are usually highest in microplastic concentrations among other food products. Is it time to switch from a chicken wing to tofu?

5. “It’s too overwhelming” is not an excuse. If we want a cleaner planet, we need to make some effort. You can learn more about microplastics with free, easy lessons in the app @microplasticfree_app (link in bio)

I worked in wastewater treatment plants and studied microplastics for 3 years. It’s one of the most pressing environmental issues of the 21st century. But I’m full of hope and I know we CAN change it❤️

Here’s my (never ending) list of unexpected places where microplastics were found.

Hi, I’m Dana, a microplastics researcher from Kazakhstan, now working in Germany:) I also talk a lot about microplastics and share solutions and tips on how to avoid them in your daily life!
