What does it really mean to report under threat?

At this year's Global Media Forum in Bonn, MiCT Fellow Fahmideh Hosseini will take the stage for “Behind the story: Journalists under threat” - a powerful live storytelling session featuring voices of exiled and at-risk journalists sharing their realities, challenges, and resilience.

Fahmideh will be joined by Lucía Navas from Nicaragua, Inna Varenytsia from Ukraine and fellow journalists sharing their lived experiences.

The #HannahArendtInitiative is a program of the German Federal Government for the protection of media professionals in and from crisis and conflict areas. The projects are funded by the German Federal Foreign Office and the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM).

Three conflicts. Three journalists. One commitment: protecting press freedom.

This #WorldPressFreedomDay, we highlight just a few of the realities journalists face, from Ukraine to Benin to Afghanistan. Contexts where reporting the facts can lead to intimidation, detention, or worse.
But these are not isolated cases. Across Eastern Europe, West Africa, Central and South Asia, the Middle East, and beyond, journalists continue to work under pressure, navigating censorship, threats, financial constraints, and insecurity.

At MiCT, we stand with journalists who are under threat for doing their job. Because press freedom is not abstract, it is lived, daily, often at a great cost.

April marks three years since the war in Sudan started. Its conflict is etched into everyday life, and these images make it visible.

Through their lenses, Sudanese Fellows document a country suspended between rupture and continuity, where daily life persists, even if lives are uprooted by conflict.

“Working with journalists in war zones means daily contact with people fighting to survive – often displaced, under threat, and on the move with their families. What’s truly remarkable is how they keep reporting, determined to make their voices heard,” shared Rana Akbani, MiCT’s project manager for Middle East and North Africa at the recent #InternationalJournalismFestival in Perugia.

MiCT joined partners of the Hannah Arendt Initiative to reflect on what journalists in exile and at risk need today – from insurance and psychological support to safe working environments, funding, and stronger networks.

Alongside DW Akademie, European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), and JX Fund, the discussion brought together perspectives from different regions and reinforced the importance of coordinated, long-term support for journalists forced to work in exile or under threat.

@nazzal.bzu grew up in Qalqilya, in the West Bank, inspired by the work of journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. What began as admiration, became a professional path that placed him on the front lines of the events he set out to document.

“I found myself working in front of bullets, tear gas and sound bombs. I never retreated, although I was hit several times,” he shares.

In 2025, he became a participant of the #FellowshipforCriticalVoices, MiCT's protection programme for journalists working in high-risk environments. His photograph ‘Stolen Freedom’ was selected as a finalist for the Open Eye Award 2025.

“When are you going home?” As fighting erupted along the Thailand–Cambodia border, the question began to follow Cambodian migrant workers into construction sites, farms, and factories across Thailand.

Fellow Vantha Phoung traced how a border conflict spilled into the workplace, exposing migrant workers to violence, fear, and forced return, despite having no role in the war itself. Photos from @rounry.

This selection from the Open Eye Award 2025 brings together images by MiCT Fellows working across different conflict-affected contexts. Each photograph tells a local story, but together they showcase a shared reality: lives impacted and reshaped by war.

How are women organizing in the Democratic Republic of Congo to address climate change? How are Ukrainian women entrepreneurs rebuilding in the fourth year of war or women across the Mediterranean crowdfunding support for Gaza?

From the Middle East to West Africa, women journalists document realities from conflict-affected regions that often remain underreported. Frequently at significant personal and professional cost (often greater than their male counterparts) they connect local realities with global conversations.

This #InternationalWomensDay #IWD2026, we invite you to see the world through her lens. Fellows document women championing change: how women organise, work, and lead in contexts shaped by conflict. Different countries, similar challenges, and the same strength, resilience, and empathy to face them.

Some images are difficult to look at, and even more difficult to look away from.

Recently, the #OpenEyeAward2025 reception in Berlin filled the MiCT Roof with photographs by participants of the #FellowshipforCriticalVoices, journalists and media professionals continuing their work in conflict areas such as Ukraine, Palestine, Syria and Myanmar among other countries.

Having Fellows @nazzal.bzu (West Bank) and @i_m_zarni (Myanmar) present shifted the exhibition from display to dialogue. Their presence grounded the images in the realities that produced them.

“I got out of captivity, but the captivity didn’t get out of me.”

For two and a half years, Ukrainian soldier Dmytro was held in Russian captivity. Today, he is back at the front, commanding a unit, training soldiers, and going into battle. Yet captivity still shapes his everyday reality, marked by the knowledge that many of his “brothers” remain there.

As this week marks four years since the Russian full-scale invasion started, we feature the work of Fellows Ksenia Savoskina and Alexey Nikulin. They spoke with Dmytro and helped tell his story of survival, return and the invisible aftermath of war. Watch the interview in the link in bio
