Living Stones: a title that invites us to imagine movement in something still.

Axel Salto’s vase, designed in 1943, brings stoneware and Sung glaze together in a form whose name suggests the meeting of mineral and organic worlds. The relationship between surface and volume makes it an object to consider slowly, from more than one angle.

Produced by Royal Copenhagen, this example bears both Salto’s incised name and the factory’s blue wave mark. Those signatures record the meeting of an individual artistic vision with the resources of a manufacturer: a particularly fruitful relationship in twentieth-century Danish ceramics.

Lot 82 in Sworders Design sale on Tuesday 14 July is this vibrant and iconic ‘Nuage’ bookcase by Charlotte Perriand. Originally designed between 1952 and 1956, the idea first came to Perriand after visiting Kyoto’s Katsura Imperial Villa in 1940.

I’ve been quietly taking stock after a busy event this weekend and recognising that success comes in lots of forms.

When I first started doing shows, I measured success almost entirely by sales.

These days, I see it differently.

Yes, making back my stand fee matters. Selling to new customers matters. But so do the conversations, the repeat visitors, the newsletter sign-ups, the confidence boosts and the connections with other makers.

This weekend’s MidCentury takeover with @midcentury_modern delivered all of those things.

I was invited back, gained new subscribers, created content that was shared by the organisers and even had someone say my scarves were nicer than Hermès (!).

Sometimes it’s worth taking a moment to recognise all the wins, not just the obvious ones.
