Wherever you are in your journey, you don’t have to have it all figured out before you walk through the door. Your first few prenatal appointments are an opportunity to get to know one another, share your hopes and concerns, learn about your options, and begin building a relationship with the person who may walk alongside you through one of the most significant experiences of your life! A good midwife won’t expect you to come prepared with a list of perfectly worded questions. She’ll make space for your uncertainties, help you explore the things you may not have thought to ask, and encourage you to become an informed, confident participant in your own care. You don’t have to know everything to get started, you just have to be willing to start the conversation. đŸ€— Your questions can come as you learn, and your confidence will grow as your relationship develops. -Rhoda Midwife, Agape Birth Services in Huntertown, Indiana 💛 #birth #midwifery #pregnantmama #fortwayneindiana by @midwiferhoda
Absolutely love this! Counterpressure is an AMAZING labor coping tool, and I believe it’s highly underrated. (Double hip squeezes are similar and are also a great labor tool) Love this example from @doula.bangkok Did you do this during labor? #birth #childbirth #homebirth by @midwiferhoda
Birth is natural, but being prepared for the unexpected is essential. That’s why continuous training and practicing emergency scenarios are such an important part of midwifery care. From managing postpartum hemorrhage to responding to unexpected changes during birth, regular training helps midwives recognize warning signs, respond quickly, and work confidently as a team when every second matters. A big part of having peace of mind comes from knowing your care team is ready for anything! đŸ™ŒđŸŒđŸ€° #midwifery #midwife #pregnantlife #fortwayneindiana by @midwiferhoda
This is absolutely fascinating about breast milk. Did you know this?! đŸ™ŒđŸŒđŸ€— #breastfeeding #breastmilk #breastfeedingmom by @midwiferhoda
You don’t have to be terrified of birth. I won’t sit here and say every birth looks like this
but what I will say, is many births CAN look like this, and that’s a truth many women have not been exposed to! So many women assume that in natural birth, it’s going to be excruciating, lots of loud noise, screaming, fear etc
But when you know how to work with your hormones, train your breathing and prepare your birth space with labor coping tools, have the right support and birth team
birth can actually look very different than what we are used to seeing in movies, shows etc. Thankful that this mama graciously shared her birth footage with the world for us to see and learn from! đŸ€— #birth #fortwayne #homebirth #waterbirth by @midwiferhoda
â˜đŸŒInductions are a MAJOR topic in the birth world. Just like so many different things in the medical system; sometimes intervention is necessary. But with cases in pregnancy and birth, it is truly rare for an induction to be an EMERGENT necessity. If you can schedule it, it’s not an emergency. It is absolutely insane to see pregnant women’s providers offering inductions like it’s candy 🍭 for just any reason at all. This is reckless, unfair, misleading, and can be so damaging to mama and baby in multiple ways. đŸ€”Are women being given the full truth about inductions? đŸ€”If they’re a first time mom, do they know that inducing with Pitocin has a 50% higher chance of bringing stress onto baby and ending in a C-section? đŸ€”Do they know that Pitocin (synthetic oxytocin) doesn’t cross the blood brain barrier and therefore doesn’t trigger endorphin release in the way it should (a natural pain reliever) therefore making contractions much more intense and painful? đŸ€”Are they told induction with Pitocin has a link with effecting breastfeeding relationship right after baby is born? I’m sure there are moms who have had a great induction experience! The thing that matters the most, is that each mom is given all the facts and evidence based info before making a truly informed decision 💯 In midwifery care, we respect the process of letting labor unfold and baby coming when they are ready. A bigger baby, age, due date etc are NOT legit reasons to warrant an induction and are often used as manipulative tactics to control the outcome of mama’s labor timeframe 😔 ...ever wondered why inductions are pushed so heavily within a week before major holidays? That isn’t an accident, unfortunately. With this being said, I hope this encourages you to educate yourself and stay informed on this topic! I know the end of pregnancy can get hard, but baby will come when he/she is ready! đŸ„° #pregnantmom #babynumber2 #homebirth #birthprep #secondtrimester by @midwiferhoda
Thank you @morganmacdermott for sharing this video!! This is important for mamas to see if they are preparing for labor, especially natural labor. Transition is intense. It’s considered the toughest part of labor, but thankfully also the shortest! (Some women barely experience just a couple of minutes of transition before baby is born! It’s when you reach about 7/8cm dilated and baby is coming through the cervix and through the birth canal before pushing. To help cope with this intensify, breathing is so important. Keeping breathing in low slow moans and keeping that draw very relaxed, it’s directly connected to the pelvic floor so it’s going to help to keep everything relaxed and less tense. Being submerged in warm water can also help tremendously with staying relaxed and easing pain during the transition period. What was your experience during transition like? Share your tips below! #birth #naturalbirth #childbirth #homebirth by @midwiferhoda
I couldn’t have said it better! 💛 Birth, and everything immediately after birth, is totally driven by hormones. The hormones run the show and effect everything; How labor progresses (or stalls), how mama and baby bond, how baby begins to latch and establish breastfeeding
Being able to smell your baby’s pheromones will release a cascade of oxytocin and various hormones to help the beginning domino effects of your colostrum and eventually milk output. The more oxytocin flows, the more your uterus also continues to contract and facilitate in your body’s healing process. When you smell and touch your newborn immediately after birth, sensory signals travel to your brain—particularly areas involved in maternal bonding and lactation. Baby’s smell can stimulate oxytocin release ❀ Newborn odor is a powerful maternal cue. Exposure to your baby’s smell, especially combined with skin-to-skin contact, can increase maternal oxytocin activity. Oxytocin is important because it causes the milk-ejection (“let-down”) reflex. It also promotes bonding and helps the uterus contract after birth. It’s not “bad” to put a hat on a baby per ce, but keeping baby warm while being able to smell that newborn smell has so many benefits of its own! What are your thoughts? Absolutely incredible what mothers’ bodies can do! Have you ever been curious how breast milk was made in the body? đŸŒđŸ©ž #birth #breastfeeding #postpartum #newbornlife by @midwiferhoda
