Happy birthday to the great Toshiro Mifune! Mifune would be 104 today, born on April 1st, 1920. There is so much to be said about this man, but at sometimes not much to be said at all. He was born in China to Japanese emigrés who left to spread Methodism as missionaries (Mifune was of the Methodist religion). His father Tokuzo owned a photography studio, where a young Mifune served as a model and at the same learned the tricks of the trade. Mifune spent his childhood playing multiple sports and getting into all kinds of hijinks. He was the oldest of three children, and had a brother and a sister. At age 19, Mifune was drafted into the Imperial Japanese Army during World War II; Mifune had never set foot in Japan prior to that. His skills as a photographer served him well while working in the Aviation division; Mifune said that that was what probably saved his life.After the war and in desperate need of a job, a friend suggested he get a job at Toho Studios, as the Japanese film industry was steadily getting back on its feet. As legend has it, a friend sent his resume to the acting department. He had little interest in acting, but when he was asked to audition for the New Faces of Toho program he did it anyways. A young director named Akira Kurosawa saw his audition and was thoroughly impressed. 25 years ago today, Toshiro Mifune left this world. He passed away on December 24, 1997, in Tokyo, Japan. While he was an incredible actor who took pride in his craft, he was also a gentle soul. Not only did Mifune help change the face of Japanese cinema and bring it into its Golden Age, he helped bring it to the forefront with films like Rashomon, Musashi Miyomoto, and Yojimbo. Because of this, the world recognized the beauty of Japanese film. Mifune also produced many films, including his own film, Legend of the 500,000; Mifune Productions carries on his legacy to this day. Mifune's visage is on the side of Toho Studios' main building as his Seven Samurai character Kikuchiyo, surrounded by his fellow samurai; Kikuchiyo's respect and dedication to his fellow warriors and the villagers he saved in a way reflected Mifune's own action as a veteran of World War II. He never advanced past the rank of sargent because he chose to defend his fellow soldiers against the abuse from their superiors. Near the end of the war he was assigned to the kamikaze unit; he took good care of the young men who would soon be flying to their deaths. Because of his experiences he became fiercely anti-war. Mifune was a father to three children, a grandfather, and a good friend. While he left this world too soon, he didn't leave it without making an indelible mark upon it.
