I started this project in June of last year with one goal: build something I could rip around town that paid homage to my love of the 1970s vintage Japanese motorcycles of my childhood.
The clear choice was Yamaha’s big single — the bike that won the first Paris-Dakar Rally, then came back and won it again the next year. Reliable, simple, torquey, and iconic: the Yamaha XT500.
In the end, I scored two 1979 TT500s — the motocross version. One was basically a box of parts in a rolling frame. The other was an abandoned flat tracker with a seized motor that had sat through 15 rainy winters with water pouring straight into its single cylinder.
But that flat tracker had the holy grail: a street-legal California title and current non-op registration. The roller had an engine that looked okay and had compression… but zero history.
After nearly a year of wrenching, this is the result. I’m beyond hyped on how she came out.
She rips. Gobs of low-end power. So fun to ride.
Huge thanks to my buddy @notnotstoked for all the tool loans and moral support. And big thanks to Dave at @nwtcycletronic for the tech support and Sundays electrical troubleshooting. If electronics make you break out in a cold sweat, Dave is your guy.
If anyone wants to bring a vintage Japanese bike back from the dead and ride it come join us at @hokkaido_dust_club by @miggy_1986

Gutted. It’s taken a couple days to truly sink in. Hard to believe Sunni is gone. My sister from another mother. Roomie. Homegirl. Our place on 3rd st was the center of the Universe for our tribe back in the early 90s. It was some of the best years of our lives. An epic era for all of us @_vestal , Mance, Miguel, Zebas, we’ll all miss you. See ya on the other side☁️ 🤙🏽. by @miggy_1986

Here is my uncle Bernie in the theater during WWII. Familiar with the movie “Inglourious Basterds”? He was one of the Jewish American soldiers who contributed to the Allied victory. In just one generation before, his grandfather and his grandfather’s brother 14 & 15 years old, fled a small village near Pinsk (Eastern Europe) to come to the U.S.A. (Circa 1890) Prior to the start of WWII, The Nazi’s rolled through the village of my grandfather’s childhood and murdered everyone. Bernie enlisted and subsequently became a decorated war hero and fought his fucking heart out. On this Memorial Day, we pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
